I have a NOID passie that has set a lot of fruit. Are all passie fruits edible? or only certain ones? And if edible when is it ripe? I've let several get REALLY ripe..as in mushy..to collect seeds.
fruit question
I think they are all safe to eat .. though they probably all don't taste good. Actually, I haven't tried one that DID taste good.

Hi Ginger,
What is NOID? No identification? Anyway, not all passie fruit are edible, and not all that are edible taste good. The most common edible ones are P. edulis and P. incarnata. What color are your fruit? Could you post a pic or describe the plant and fruit? Passie fruit that are to be eaten should usually be allowed to fall from the vine naturally, and allowed to ripen inside for a few days (the fragrance lets you know when they are ready).

Hey Mark,
You are right re: NOID. The flowers on it are small...white with a medium/dark lavender center. The fruit starts out green (DUH) and when really soft turns dark purple. Right now it is sprinkling here, but I'll try for a picture later. Thanks
Sounds like P. edulis, edulis. That one has the fruit that ripens to purple, and it is supposed to be one of the best tasting edible ones. Here is a pic from the Plant files:

Thank you for the link...none of the pictures look quite like the one I have and naturally no bloom today so no picture. Might have one open tomorrow.
Looks like passi morifolia.

It's definitely not edulis, and its one that I'm not familiar with.
Mark
hmmmmm..it does look the same..thanks!
Ha!
I googled "Toxic Passionata" and all I got was lingerie!
Changed it to Toxic Passiflora and was back in the garden.
LOL That was funny!
I blame that on Beethoven!!!
the sonata Appassionata, one of my all time favorites. I just don't see how fingers came move like that.
they say I have piano fingers but I don't know how to play, my second oldest though...when he wants to....can play like its nobodies business
