this second pic is about the upright growing triangular growths (with growths on them, the back one being a developing flower but the front one??)
the back one was a piece that i just stuck in the dirt and now it is growing. the front on is growing off the plant proper. xuling

and this third pic is about the lower section of the plant with long 'leaves' that are skinny and have leaves growing off them and they dangle down to the ground and lie on the ground. xuling

All the growth that you are seeing is normal. Epi's are "odd" they can go through stages. Their early young growth does look a lot like a cactus as they grow they change into the epi forms.. The growth you see will probable change to look like the older growth, but then again some will stay that way. I have a "ric rac" epi that has 3 different patterns in the zig zag on the leave but as the leaves age they change to the normal older leave pattern. You can have flat paddles, 3 sided, four sided ore the ric rac pattern.

Hope this helps.

xuling, wren is right. I have 100s of epis and I have never seen such a variety of different growth patterns . Don't be surprised if the pieces resting on the ground take root. I have had branches wander into another pot and start a whole new plant growing. You will also find that sometimes a root will come out and start looking elsewhere and send up a shoot.
Just this morning I found a branch that is flat but the shoot off the end is triangular. The flowers are so beautiful , one doesn't mind if the plant does it's own thing.

it is an incredible plant. when it was fist given to me i had it out in the full sun just like the rest of the cactus and succulents!! after i learned that this was not a good idea and moved it under the olive tree and started watering it properly it started growing like crazy.
can i hang it up high so the hanging leaves just hang in the air as opposed to dropping down and sitting on the cement? xuling

The epis are mostly grow on trees so yes putting it up in a tree is great idea.

I have agound 200+ epies most where bought from the Gotepis.com/cart who is over there in Calif.

Note on the Epie growth habit: I, too, have several hundred Epies and they live in rather close quarters. I have found several recently that have extended over in a neighbors pot and taken root rather quickly. I have become fascinated by these plants! bob
