Eggplants in SWCs

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10a)

I decided to give eggplants a try in one of my GPs this year for the first time(started them real late after I got tired of cukes). I planted it with 3 cups 5-6-3 organic fertilizer and used an EB shower cap. To my surprise they are starting to produce pretty good. I planted one Black Beauty and one Millionaire. Here's what I picked this evening and there's quite a few still growing on the plant.

2 Eggplants on one blossom. Why can't they all do that? :)

If only my eggplants are as pretty as yours...

Since tomato is a fruit...EGGPLANT is my FAVORITE VEGGIE.

Pan-fried or broiled eggplant and rice makes me happy already. And I found this site:

Oh I'm sure yours are as pretty or prettier :)

Isn't Eggplant considered a fruit too? Shoot, I don't know anymore. They keep switching from one side to another. I'm gonna start calling them all Fruitables.

Thanks for the ideas and links as always.

You're right, it's a FRUIT!

I guess I don't know veggies.

Hell I don't know ....I'm not right about anything :)

Aren't squash, cucumbers and peppers considered fruit too?

Corte Madera, CA

I haven't Googled them yet...

Looks like I have one (1) Black Beauty after all and will probably cook it this weekend. That plant is in a square foot success kit that is NOT SO SUCCESSFUL.

I'm rethinking the shower caps, LOL.

Wish you were closer....I'd give you most of my eggplants. I already have more than I will ever use. Getting ready to pick about a dozen more today.

HA! Warming up to the shower caps now? But they aren't very purdy lol

Well, I was thinking, if I poke holes for the marigolds and nasturtiums, they will eventually cover the shower caps.

Ok, what's an earthbox shower cap? or shower cap to begin with, I'm lost here? Ray; those eggplants look great. Mine are still producing too. I noticed spiders on the ichabad's and the bell peppers though. Time to spray again.

EarthBox Covers, Joy. Mark and I gave it a nickname a few threads back.

Anyhow, how are your Ichabod eggplants producing? Is it a hybrid developed in Sleepy Hollow (Connecticut)?

One of my favorite is Ichiban, a Japanese eggplant variety. I plan to grow it again next season. Really beautiful plant, and the fruits are sweet.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Are Ichabod and Ichiban different varieties or different names for the same long thin type of eggplant? I was told once that Ichiban means "number one". And isn't Sleepy Hollow in New York (north of White Plains), not Connecticut?

Corte Madera, CA

Don, you are correct. Sleepy Hollow was set in a Dutch settlement in NY. Ichabod Crane was from Connecticut.

Wow, you're up early.

=)

Wind tolerance of eggplants. Are there eggplant varieties that are more wind tolerantant than others when it comes to blossom drop. I live in a windy place in Hawaii and have the plants protected from the wind the best I know but still get blossom drop. Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

I was hoping somebody with more experience growing Eggplants might be able to help you out. I've only grown 2 varieties and both did decent for me. I will say this, my Black Beauty had an awful lot of blossom drop early on. But ended up producing pretty good. Only thing I can suggest is shield it as best you can and hope some blossoms will set.

Waimanalo Long I recommended by the University of Hawaii and most Japanese varieties. I have no personal experience though.
