CLOSED: Is this some type of hawk?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Forgive the lousy pic. This bird has hung around our property for at least 2 years. It makes me nervous that it seems to follow DH when he's mowing. Has never made a move to hurt him or anything, but I just find that kinda peculiar.

thanks for your help. Every time I tried to get closer for a better pic, it flew away. You can't see it in this pic, but his tail has showy white feathers.

Boys! That bird travelled fast! It was just here at my place a few days ago. lol. All kidding aside, I believe you've got a Redshouldered Hawk.

lol Lily. that is exactly what it is. doesn't look like it's a threat to my honey. I guess he just follows Mark because the mower stirs the ground and insects and other objects of prey are more visible. good to know. Besides general appearance, two other facts about this bird confirm it is a red shouldered hawk. 1) It is a permanent resident. when I first posted I wanted to say it has been around FOREVER, but I incorrectly assumed they were migratory and "forever" had to be in my imagination. I wasn't crazy, this hawk has been in my wooded lot for years. 2) The distinct black/white markings on wings/tail.

They can attack small mammals and I have a small dog and a rabbit, so I do need to be watchful.

Your furbaby is very much like my neighbor's. Jojo we called him, they're so adorable. Yes as small as he's. I'd be mindful when outside alone.

First pic is a Red-shouldered Hawk; second pic I'd say is a Pooch ;-)

No need to worry, a rabbit is too large for a Red-shouldered Hawk. "Small mammals" means mice, chipmunks, and maybe rats. A big Red-tailed Hawk (nearly twice the weight of a Red-shouldered Hawk) could take a wild rabbit, but might struggle with a large domesticated rabbit.
