This weekend's harvest

San Francisco Bay Ar, CA(Zone 9b)

This year my poor garden has pretty much had to fend for itself. Due to work constraints I've had very little time to organize my plantings. Thankfully my garden has not punished me for the benign neglect and provided some tasty meals.

Here is some of what I brought home from my plot on Sunday. As you can see, one zucchini successfully hid behind the leaves and got away from me until it was huge. My one San Marzano tomato plant has produced ~30 pounds of paste tomatoes so far this year. I bottled nine pints of tomatoes today. Hmmm, maybe I should turn that big zuke into some ratatouille and bottle some of that for the winter.

Here is a two pound "Rainbow" tomato that just happened to be ripe on Sunday.

It made a very tasty dinner with some fresh basil leaves, fresh raw milk kefir-quark, a little olive oil, salt and pepper and accompanied by the leftover sourdough English muffins I made this morning. Sorry, no photo of the muffins. I ate them too quickly.

It all looks wonderful. Those onions look like they might have won a blue ribbon at the fair. What kind of squash is that in front of the zuke? They're really pretty and I like the size/shape.

Hmmm - squash or melons?

I like to use those big zukes for Zucchini Bread, in fact, that's tonight's project! Yum!

Nice haul! My onions never get that big. Good job!

Thanks! The onions were a surprise. They were hiding under other plants. All the other onions bolted during the last heat wave, even though it was their first year.

The squash are delicata squash. These are normally longer and narrower when you see them at market. I let them grow until they come loose from the vine, similar to the way you test a melon. They have very sweet orange flesh and are great for grilling and stuffing.

Everything is still going strong. The potatoes are about ready to be dug. I'm happy to have been able to harvest as much as I did, considering how little time I've had for the garden this summer.

GM if your bolted onions have some substance to them, put them through the food processor and then dry them. They might not want to keep long fresh but they work wonderfully dried.

I have 3 delicata squash plants surviving the SVB attacks. I've never grown them of even eaten one before. They're a hybrid named Barbara and are shaped like a butternut. I'm really looking forward to them. I just planted zukes for the umpteenth time yesterday. I keep hoping the SVBs will lighten up.

Beautiful harvest. I wish my red onions would get that large.

I hear ya Cala! My red "burger" onions are about the size of her shallots! they wouldn't even cover a slider-burger!
