This is my very first year gardening so technically, I have no idea what I'm doing - other than learning as I go.
In honor of my grandparents, I planted by the moon as they always did. The results, I must say, are impressive. My garden looks like "honey I shrunk the kids" and the produce is coming along very nicely!! I did nothing to my garden before planting - no fertilizers, herbicides, manure, etc., and my garden is twice as big as my neighbors' gardens who have been gardening for years! Matter of fact, my one neighbor, who we bought our farm from, told me in the spring, not to plant my garden where I did because he tried that spot and could never get anything to grow there. ......I'm sold on gardening by the moon!! :) I sure wish my Grannyies and Papaws were here to see my garden!
I'll post 2 pictures. This one is from early spring. :) In it you see two kinds of potatoes, tomatoes, watermelon, corn, pumpkins, onions, and pole beans.
Results Report: My first year gardening by the moon
This was taken this last week. My potatoes are finally browning and falling over. I dug up one plant and found the most beautiful large potatoes!!! ......I have really enjoyed my first year gardening, and I am sooo glad I put down the landscaping fabric walkways. Between the straw mulch and landscaping fabric walkways, I did not have to weed my garden once!!!! I love a low-maintenance garden! :-D
I didn't realize it, but my granddaughter, Lilli, is in the first picture. :) We have 5 grandsons, and 1 granddaughter - Lilli, all 8 years old and under!!! .....MY six angels! :)
In the second picture, keep in mind that my tomato plants are 5 feet tall!!!! I had no idea they could get that tall! :)
Also, I planted ALL open pollinated seeds this year so these are heirloom plants - the old kind. :)
Glenda, looks like Lilli is keeping your rows straight. ^_^
A wonderful garden, you Should be Proud.
Daves Garden has lots of info I know you will use, BUT....
Last week I was rereading one of Ruth Stout books, 'No-Work Garden Book' and in it she says many times, 'this is the way I do it (gardening) and it works for me, and I hope it works for you.'
So keep doing what your doing, it sure is working.
Ruth Stout puts down straw, mulch, to block the weeds and did (she has passed on) NO digging or tilling.
Also she said, 'If you must, buy a good Gardening book and read it well, But Do Not buy a second book because the second book will surely contradict the first.
So keep on doing what your doing and do post more pic, I love them.
Glenda, what a beautiful garden! I keep wavering on things -- I pull weeds when they need to be pulled, you know? -- but this, to me, is hard evidence, especially since your gardening neighbors couldn't grow things there. Thanks for sharing this!
Very impressive Glenda & you did this in Michigan? The season is
so very short there! Congrats on a terrific production.
