I was thinking maybe a Cassin's Sparrow because of the speckly tail, but Sibleys doesn't put them in my area.
Taken today at the Nachusa Grasslands. In the grass, as you can see.
CLOSED: No Idea-grassland bird
Looks like a Carolina Wren to me.

well i agree that's what the tail looks like, but the beak is just not right for a wren.
Humm, I was looking at the white eyebrow stripe, Maybe Resin will be by soon.

Sedge Wren! Never heard of it! LOL. Okay, new bird for me then. Thanks!
I, too, had never heard of a Sedge Wren. I goggled it and found these pics.

yep, that's the one. saw the cornell page on them too. That small beak really fooled me. But I guess if it is grassland then maybe it doesn't have to peck at bark and stuff much. Anyway, glad to have seen it. I wonder how many hundreds of other new birds are there waiting for me to discover them???
I know I flushed out a quail! HA.
I haven't seen a new bird for a while. Of course, I just started birding a couple months ago. However, I am looking forward to October - I understand a lot of birds may be headed my way on their migration.
I have been playing "cat and mouse" with a hawk - my first hawk. Resin thinks it is either a Cooper's or a Sharp-shined.one. My only photo so far of it was not a good one. It was taken by a 4 megapix deer game camera that I set up overlooking my bird bath. The image was blurred by a drop of water on the lens - dang it..
I'm still hoping it will be here when I am. Maybe I can get a good picture of it. I suspect it is dining on some of my feeder birds, of which house finches, house sparrows and cardinals are my most common sight.

you know, i was just thinking yesterday that I haven't seen a hawk in my yard all summer. probably because I have less birds at the feeders.
I don't get too many fall migrants other than the hummingbirds. but there's two weeks in the spring that are amazing for the spring migrants!
Ahh, springtime, another time to look forward to.
