Early clean up

Arlington, TX

I started cutting back and pulling out tired annuals and overgrown, icky looking perennials. It is always such a shock and depressing after I start this process. Not sure why I started it this early but my okra is still producing but looking bad in spots and some perennials are so over grown they are on top of one another. I need to move them in the spring. Am I the only one who feels sad after fall clean up? I miss the tangled, flowering jungle!

Goodness, you *are* early - way more efficient than I am!

I was very late getting a garden started this year, so I'm not looking at that kind of clean-up just yet, but you are so right - I dread the thought of taking down all the vines that cover my deck and clearing it back to bare wood. It's so shady and green and private with the melons and cucumbers and stuff crawling all over it.

Maybe try starting some seeds for lettuce and carrots and spinach and broccoli and see if that doesn't perk up your spirits. :)

Have a great day!

Excellent idea, I think I still have some carrot, lettuce and brocolli seeds somewhere. Is it too early, meaning hot to start them now?

I'm starting mine in bright shade and they seem to be doing fine so far - even the broccoli, which I have never been able to grow from seed before. :)

Lowe's has a lot of fall garden seedlings for sale right now too - I bought a nine-pack of Romaine lettuce, some early cucumbers and crookneck and butternut squash plants the other day, but they also had peppers and a bunch of other stuff.
