Can anyone tell me why my Pickerelweed and Sweet Flag's leaves are turning brown? It looks like the are burnt, like its too hot for them or their getting too much sun, they are facing west, I have about 900 gal pond its about 22" deep it the deepest part, with some ledges. Thanks for any help and what I can do about it. Katherine

How deep are your plants in the water and is the first year for both of these plants?
No this isn't the first year, I have had the pickerelweed since the beginning. The sweet flag I have it 3 or4 years. I have several of each and the depth varies, the water is over the top of the crowns or 1-3". Will the depth make a difference? Katherine
If the plants are too deep or not deep enough, it would effect the plants. I think your depths are fine though.
Your plants also are not new plants, which tells me they have already been established plants - sometimes new plants just don't take.
I think you are seeing the same thing that I am seeing with my pickerelweed and sweet flag. I noticed the leaves are browning out early this year on the pickerelweed and the waterlilies. I also noticed that some of my sweet flag browned out a month ago or more and is now coming back from the bottom and then I have other sweet flags that are just now starting to brown out. Not sure if it is the weather or what the situation is. I do know we seem to be seeing signs of fall much earlier this year than in previous years.
Carolyn, thanks for the discussion and information. Katherine
