How much sun does Siam Ruby really like?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hello everyone,

My Musa Siam ruby is in full sun, and it seems that no matter how much I water....the leaves always end up burning! If you have one too, how much sun does yours get?

I think I might have to transplant it...any advice?

Thanks!

hiya Rob. I put my young siam in full sun and it hated it. Then I moved it to covered patio and it didn't recover. If I were to get another one, I would keep it out of the sun until I started seeing new leaves, and gradually move it to more and more sun. I would also be conservative w/ water. I have killed more from over- than from underwatering

how big a pot do you have now?

I have two in absolute full sun for 12 hours a day. They LOVE it. They put out leaf after leaf and are pupping like mad.

Gothqueen, how large is that Tibouchina leaf in the background? About how old is your plant (Tib)? Just curious. I have three types, including that one, but not sure if my leaves are that large yet!

Nery, she is actually planted in the ground...it's growing fine, it even has a pup now. But as soon as the leaves get larger...they fry!
Gothqueen, I am not familiar with your area in FL. Is it pretty humid or not? I'm thinking perhaps yours are doing great in full sun due to enough humidity? It's reaaaaaally dry here these days...zero rain and I have to water every day...

Humid or dry air can make a great difference to plants. Some will flourish in humid air with more intense sunlight but will wither in drier air in less intense sun despite getting the same amount of water.

That is a really really weird proportional shot of that tib leaf, LOL it kinds 3d's out of the frame. That plant is several years old. It was originally a 3 gallon plant that I planted inside my greenhouse because this particular tib does not seem to do well with coming back from cold. But it started to take over so I cut it back and rooted several cuttings. I eventually had to dig it up and containerize it all, so I have a few containers floating around that I use as accent plants in spring summer and fall.

Yes, it is EXTREMELY humid here and that probably does make a huge difference. The average humidity at this time of year here ranges from 60-100%, day in and day out. We won't get any drier air until late October when the first cool fronts actually start to make it over here, then it will only be a day or so at a time as they pass through and the heat and humidity return

Tropicbreeze, that's what I figured....It's DRY here, and I mean dry, lol!

I will have to move it....which brings to my next question. How do I dig her out? I also have a very large Abyssinian that is getting way to large for where it is, and If it's feasible I'd like to move it too!

Hi CherokeeGreg! I just joined over there to learn more about bananas. I think I saw you over there.

Rob, my AeAe burns in full sun, but my Siam Ruby doesn't seem to.

On second though, I don't know if that is burn or just older leaves dying back. It could be burn, I guess.

Pasadena, CA(Zone 9b)

I had to move a different strain of banana to shade recently, as you know, Roberta, that we have had nothing but dry, dry weather since - what, April? Mine was burning, then I overwatered it, and now it is coming out of the rot in a new location in half day shade (afternoon shade!). It seems to like its new location, as it has put out leaf after leave - and each one gets better.

About moving the other Musa, I would wait until winter. The heat and lack of humidity may cause a bad case of wilt! If you do move it - wait til one of your nice overcast beach days, and hope for a few of those afterward!

Thanks Jungleman, that sounds reasonable! I'll wait till fall, but I'll have to hold myself, lol...she is getting waaaay out of proportion where she is... you can see her on the right, hiding the plumeria that's behind it!

Clare, welcome! Hey, I might be wrong but from your picture it looks like you need to amend your soil a little bit! Those bananas like it rich, black and fluffy!

Greg, where can I find a high resolution file of your awesome banana poster? I tried enlarging it but you can't read the labels too well...

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Rich, black, and fluffy...got it. I have very sandy soil. I did amend the soil when I planted it with Supersoil compost. It looks sandy on top, but it should be richer down below. I think I'll put more of it on top and mix it in a little bit. Thanks! I just planted six more bananas between my plumerias in back. Here are the bananas in front.

ok so heres the skinny ,if siam musa is in full sun in a pot it will not do its best not so much the drying out of the soil but more so the root ball gets to hot wich in return the plant does not like,,mine have always done better in the ground and with partial shade they seem to grow taller faster verse in the sun they stay short and dont grow as fast,,I have had the same exp,,with zebrina musas as well..just my 2 cents!

I found one at Green Thumb Nursery the other day for $10 and just had to buy it!
