It's already hit 38 degrees here two nights in a row. I did harvest all the rest of the veggies from the veggie garden. I left the tomatoes spread on tables in the pole barn to finish ripening. My annuals can take a light frost. I plant verbenea along with marigolds and petunias etc. They're just tough. I brought in my geraniums already after putting them in some new potting soil. They'll spend the winter indoors with us and move out again next spring.

Won't be long before winter comes. Time to start fall chores and won't be long before cleaning up flower beds. Don't forget to recycle all those great fall leaves.

Gads...WHERE did summer go? :(

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey Loon! Do geraniums have to have really bright light to winter over?

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

No they don't. You can let them go sort of dormant in a basement or somewhere. Just don't let them dry out completely or they'll wither up. I like to keep mine on a narrow bench in front of an east facing winddow. It just seems nice to have something green growing in winter. Geraniums are actually a good houseplant and smell good too. You can also cut some of the branches back and root them in water and start more plants with them.

For me, it is a cost cutting type thing. I just hate spending the money to buy them over and over again each year. They are right next to my computer desk. Can you see them? Aren't they pretty? ha ha ha

I also plan to try to bring in my red fountain grass that is hardy in zoe 6 or7. I love it and hate spending ten bucks each year to buy it over again so I'm going to dig it up from the planter it's in and pot it up with fresh dirt and bring it in for winter. I may even try to divide it up. I'll let it go sort of semi-dormant and keep it in the basement crawl space in front of a window and see if it survives winter. I've got nothing to lose. It's going to die anyway.

I overwintered red fountain grass one time and had seed heads flying around my house all winter. By the time spring came around all the fluffy seeds were off the stems. You might want to cut them back when they begin to lose the seeds.

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

Good idea. Thanks for letting me know that. I was planning on cutting it back anyway since it will be in the basement and I won't be able to babysit it like the geraniums. :)

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

Its been hot and sticky last few days. no rain here for weeks and weeks. I have to water today, or everythig is going to
keel over and shrivel and die.

Jenison, MI(Zone 6b)

Weather is wierd over here the last 4 days. Temps jumping up and down during the day and what feel's like "cool humidity"...being cold and feeling tacky is wierd...Soooo much to do before it gets cooler outside!!!
