Help me ID this bug

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 8b)

Just found this one in one of my straw bales. It appeared to have just emerged from a cocoon. It doesn't come out well in the pics but it looks like feathers on its hind legs. The iridescent green wings and head and brilliant orange make for a strikingly beautiful color combination.

Any ideas as to what kind of bug this is?

Thanks,

Jerry

I have been looking and haven't been able to find anything, but it sure is pretty.

It looks like some kind of moth to me. Where is CeeJayTown when you need her? She likes to ID bugs.

Well I guess it is not a good bug, I suppose you took care of it?

It's the adult squash vine borer and the bane of my existence this summer! If you can, smash it to smithereens and pray it doesn't lay eggs on any of your squash, watermelon, cukes, or pumpkin vines.

Forgot to mention, look for tiny, round, brown eggs on the stems and vines of your plants. They're about the size of a pin head. Just scrape them off with your fingernail if you find any.
