Beautiful - both the blooms and your daughter! Nice to see those plants flowering for you. If we are lucky we'll have another co-op with HypnoticBlooms this spring with more varieties so you can add to your collection :-)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Your daughter is adorable & pretty enough to be a model & your flowers are fantastic.
Is HypnoticBlooms where you got your Hibs? Glad you are sharing them with us.

Your daughter is lovely.

I also purchased from the Dupont co-op and while mine haven't bloomed yet, they have huge buds on them. The plants are just lovely, and I'm so happy I was able to get in on the co-op, too.

Welcome to the forum virginbred, I think you have gotten addicted to hibs just as the rest of us here in the forum. I see that you planted all your new hibs together, don't know if that work, I've always plant mien separately since I think they need the space to fully mature to a nice strong bushy plant but who knows, it miet work for you. I would wait a little longer before I cut them just to give them a chance to have thicker branches, I would also feed them with MG all purpose fertilizer ( 24-8-16 ) to help them establish themselves faster. I think it was very nice of your daughter to model the bloom for you, looks like she was enjoying it.

Wilfred

BTW, noty noty, now that's cheating, not all of us have a beautiful daughter to model our hibs for use, LOL!

Edisto Island, SC(Zone 8b)

lol...thanks wilfred for your input...my daughter was so excited at seeing these blooms she held them while i took the pics...as you can see in this pic...it's just not the same without that personal touch...also, i'm sorry i didn't make this clear...but these hibs are not planted together...they are each in their separate pots just sitting in a tray together...i believe i will have to bring them inside in the winter...i'm in zone 8b and i think it's to cold to leave them outside or i would put them in the ground...by the way, i notice you live in PR...lucky!!! do you have all of your's planted in the ground? i have visited the DR and loved seeing all the plants...are you near the coast? virginia

Hi Virginia, Beautiful flowers and a beautiful Carolina Girl too.

Yes, they should be pinched back to make a fuller plant; hibiscus tend to get leggy otherwise. You will probably need to protect them during the winter but it depends on how close to the water you are. I have a protected spot outdoors where I keep mine in the winter and in a normal year I only have to bring them in to the garage a half dozen nights each year. Last winter was not normal! I live on the marsh and it stays warmer here but you are about 10 miles due north of me so you may have a different situation.

Hi Virginia, O YEA, I have so much bad luck having to live on this beautiful island, especially in the mountain area, hard to live with this nice cool breeze on hot sunny days.LOL! makes you want to stay home all day.LOL! Truth is I am lucky indeed to live here. I have all my hibs in pots for now but I am planing to plant some in the ground soon, hard part is deciding which one to plant.

Wilfred

BTW, how many did you get for yourself.

Carolina, PR(Zone 11)

Virginia, forgot to show you what I have to tolerate every day,LOL!

How beautiful! Do you know the name of that tree? I brought some seeds back from Hawaii and I think they came from a tree that looked like that.

Edisto Island, SC(Zone 8b)

alice? pinch back now? or wait till i have to bring them in...and when i do pinch back can i root the pinched off stems? does anyone know if cajun hibs are grafted? and alice, you are so right...my daughter is a true carolina low country girl with pluff mud between her toes...

wilfred...i would love to see more pics of your area...we see so many pics of the coast but hardly any of the mountain area...keep your head down as this new hurricane passes by your island...take care...virginia

You can pinch anytime, just the tiny new growth, but remember you will sacrifice flowers that way. It is safer to wait until early spring to take any cuttings.

You can usually see the graft on hibiscus. Check out the stem and look for a swollen place where the root stock and scion have grown together.

Hi Alice, the name of the tree is an African Tulip Tree, and its difficult to control its spread of seeds every were, you can cut the tree to the ground and it will grow back again, their are like gigantic weeds over here. Here are some photos I had from the surrounding from were I live Alice, took this a while back and I don't have resent ones yet for now, the are a lots or gorgeous places on the Island most people never get to see or visit, there are things on the island you couldn't imagine existed just going to mention one, we have a lake that's call the fluorescent lake since it glows at night when the water is stirred or moved, only three places in the world has the and two are in Puerto Rico, the other is in Japan I think. The list is long that's why I just mention one.

Virginia, I'm with Alice, would wait a while for cuttings. BTW, I don't worry about hurricanes gone through 4 of them, I just lay the plants on their sides on the ground and cover them with a big plastic and big construction block holding the plastic edge down, works pretty darn well.
