Over Wintering ?

Saugerties, NY(Zone 5a)

I was wondering if I could bring in my containers of canna's and pampas grass and caladium's into the house for the winter? It's just a thought I had. I dont have a garage or a shed to store them in and I'm trying to think of a way to save them without having to take them out of the pots. Maybe its a crazy thought but I figured theres no harm in asking your thoughts... Thanks

Hi Christine
Ive never over wintered grasses and caladiums because I believe( though not positive) bulbs need a rest.
Caladiums and canas can be dug and stored in a cool place while they rest

I can't really speak to the grass or the caladium but I used to grow cannas outdoors and I don't remember them resting if it stays warm with adequate water. They might survive fine in as a temporary house plant. I think it is actually easier to store them dormant in the North though. Who wants to trip over a large pot all winter?

Is there a caladium forum where she can find out?

I overwinter my canas in the house. After the first freeze I cut off the foliage and put the entire pot in a dark area of my basement. I give them about 1 cup of water a month. In the spring I bring them up and put them in front of a window and water regularly. They pop up again in no time.

Great tip thanks I'll rethink my "caladiums as annuals" thought

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try keeping some in pots in a cold part of the house and also dig up some bulbs and store them. I have plenty so if some dont make it I'll still have some to plant next spring.
