i found one of my ducks foundering in the water, 4mth old german shepard dog in the water with her. she is injured, can't move much, but is breathing with wide open, frightened eyes. i've move her to a box of straw into the house, her injuries seem to be on the shoulders and back, she can move her neck, i don't know how to help her.
puppy attacked my duck,,,, she is still alive, help
I would let her rest in a quiet, safe place. She may be in shock. When she feels safe and has a chance to recover you can probably get a better idea of how badly she is injured.
I had a hen that was in the mouth of three different dogs before I finally got her to safety. She was pretty inert when I had to leave for work, when I got home, she was totally fine. Your duck may be OK.
I watched mom's hen Matilda being carried off by a big dog, she was fighting for all she was worth. Two days later she walked back into our yard with barely a scratch on her. She's ok so it is very much posible. Hopefully your duck is ok too.
How is the duck doing?
i am so sorry to report she died in the night, the really sad thing is this; she laid an egg before she died... it really made me cry.
I am so sorry.
I am so sorry for your loss
i have just discovered another injured duck, she has lacerations on her back, any suggestions on how to treat her, or should i let nature heal?
Most fowl heal very nicely---I think people use something called "Blue Cote" or something to help--but you don't want the lacerations to heal from the outside in and trap bacteria.
I know other people here know a lot more about this.
You are going to have to talk to that puppy!
I have 5 dogs and two are GSD--each individually will leave the chickens alone if they are with me--but when they get to a chicken as a group and I am not there--they don't tear it apart, but I have two that I think died from shock.
I am sorry for your loss. I hope this duck makes it. I've been told by other duck people that you can use Neosporin cream (not ointment) on ducks. I am getting a list together of stuff to have on hand when I get my ducks and this is one thing on it. Healing thoughts to your duck.
thanks to all. the dog isn't mine, just an escapee from another property. i have pretty much given up on having dogs around here.
Bless your heart. I am so sorry on the loss of your duck. My pup wanted to play with my chicken,I used Cut and Heal spray I got at Tractor supply. Bu I had to seperate her from him. He is four months old and I think he thought she was a "basketball with legs" She is a rescue herself before he got to her. She was almost a Perdue chicken. Sheis a very sweet girl
and I call her Sweetie. She comes to it too. She cn't run but she waddles for a slice of bread. She had an awful place on the back of her neck but she is better since the seperation. i hope your neighbors learn to control their animal. Bless you and your duck. here she is, see her neck. Poor Sweetie.
I get the neosporin spray (or store brand equivalent) The come it great little pocket sizes. I've used it on everything from a fawns head to a turtle. Much easier to use than the cream.
I know. we got to keep stuff on hand for our
furry, finny, feathery Babies. They depend on us.
How did the duck get that had lacerations on her back? I hope much better.
She died too, that dog killed 3 of my ducks in a matter of hours! It just breaks my heart. Ducks are such innocent, busy and happy little characters....and so helpless against attack. I am replacing all my fencing, but I can't replace these special little girls. I have 5 more ducks, they will be closely guarded. I am so down on dogs right now!
I am so sorry about the duck baabies all dying. My Sweetie is in her own little bungalow, I had to seperate her or he would have wallered her to death.
i think that Pup thought she was nothing more than a "basketball with legs" When he would run up to her she would just hunker down and he would
gnaw on her poor old neck. It is enough to get "down" on dogs. But i don't let him run, he is in a fenced in area. I hopeyou do not have any more trouble out
of the dogs. Best of luck to the new duck children. Charleen
Sorry, I should have started a new thread. I just got excited that I was finally able to post a picture. I didn't mean to change the subject so abruptly. Now I need to see whether I can get a better picture for ID purposes.
Don't muscovy ducks have claws? So shouldn't the ducklings have them too? That might be helpful in identifying them.
Here is the Google selection--do the pictures look right?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=muscovy+ducklings&aq=1&oq=muscovy&aqi=g10
The ducklings in the picture are younger/cuter than mine, but they do look similar. My ducks do have claws, but I thought all ducks did. These seem longer in the body than the Pekings we used to have.
You will know if they develope those little red things on their faces, for sure. They sure are cute little ducks.
I guess I will also know they're Muscovys or Muscovy-Mallard crosses if they start to fly. At what age do the flyers take off? I don't want to lose them.
