What a find!!

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

I recently put my H. macrophylla var. on a bamboo trellis, and I just noticed FIVE budding peduncles on it! It never had peduncles before, and literally within a month (that's when I put it on the trellis) it developed all these peduncles and started budding up. I was in shock when I saw it this morning!

Here's 3 of the peduncles...they are all together on the same spot of the vine:

Here is that middle peduncle...it has 2 or 3 layers of buds!

...the fourth peduncle:

And the fifth peduncle! I wonder if it was gonna happen anyway or if it likes being on a trellis - any thoughts? I will be sure to post when they open...what a show that will be!!

Hey Gabi, congrats!!! isn't it exiting to see so many peducles all at once?
I love multiple peduncles on same stem, I think it's coincidence because mine flowered with the multiple peduncles in a hanging pot.

Congratulations Gabi, and by the way I loved your 10 favorite Hoyas article in the new Stemma.

How wonderful Gabi! Congrats! H. macrophylla variegata is one beautiful Hoya ... I had a small one rec'd in a trade a year or so ago and it didn't survive my care for some reason. I just love the foliage on macrophylla var. it's one of the prettiest hoya's! Look forward to seeing the blooms on your happy plant!

Me thinks I need to add this one to my ongoing list of must haves. That is just beautiful.

Thanks guys. Yeah Jan, it must just be a coincidence, since your's likes to hang. I guess it was just ready to explode with blooms! Can't wait.

Thanks Doug - and of course this hoya was in my top ten list :)

Dee, this hoya is definitely a must-have! And it grows pretty fast.

Lin, sorry that your macro didn't survive. It doesn't make sense because all your hoyas are so healthy looking! (the ones of seen pics of).

Gabi, I know it was something I did or didn't do ... can't remember for sure but it might have been left out in the cold this past winter and just didn't recover. We had a couple of really cold nights and even a couple of freezes here last winter. With having so many darned plants I did miss a few when moving some in and covering others with blankets.

I think many hoyas benefit from being put on a trellis or something they can feel they are climbing....

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for that info Carol. I had a feeling that the timely peduncles and buds had to do with the recent switch to a trellis, but I wasn't sure.

2 of the umbels have opened...I will post pics tomorrow.

Congrats Gabi! How is that beautiful Shooting Star Hoya doing?

@ Carol: I found out firsthand that several of my hoyas really took off with larger leaves once I put them on a trellis. Fungii is still holding out on peduncles, but good things come to those who wait!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Except for those that like to hang....and there are those who hang AND climb, most hoyas will climb. Few exceptions which will become obvious as soon as you want them to climb!!! Those that put out new growth that searches for something to hold on to are good candidates.

Ok....here are 2 of the open umbels (one on the left and one on the right):

I can't figure out what they smell like!

They are TINY...and there are more buds behind both of the umbels - I hope these flowers last long so that I can see both open at the same time.

Beautiful Blooms!

You can't figure out what it smells like? LOL, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble trying to compare a hoyas fragrance with another substance. I've heard some say one has a buttery fragrance, another smells like butterscotch, and yet another one smells like chocolate .. and I can never remember which one is supposed to have which fragrance. Since I can never tell for sure, as long as they smell Good I just say they are fragrant. I know I don't want the one that a few folks referred to as smelling like horse poop! ^_^

Your macrophylla variegata is really lovely, both foliage and blooms!

edited to correct spelling.

Thanks Lin and Doug!

Yes Lin...as long as it doesn't smell like rotting garbage, horse poop, or smelly socks, I'm all good!

And what's wrong with horse poop?

(Zone 1)

Eeeewww ... it stinks! ^_^

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Granted...there ARE better odors...but the smell of horsemanure, to me, is a very 'verdant' and healthy smell. Then again, I love horses....

Gabi, pretty blooms!! I love my var macrophylla.
Carol, you love nature's perfume. There is a hoya flower smells like hay I forgot which hoya but this one and magifica should smell great together.

I have H. magnifica but it hasn't bloomed yet. I thought it was supposed to smell really great but I guess our noses do detect scent differently sometimes. I've learned that when it comes to colognes and perfume, a lot of us have different takes on scent. One of my sisters used to really love a particularly expensive perfume (I can't remember the name of it) but I thought it smelled awful. I have always loved Chanel No. 5 and I remember one year (not too long ago) telling my husband I wanted it for Christmas. His reaction was "I thought that was an old ladies perfume?" He doesn't much care for the scent of the Chanel but did get it for me, as well as my every day favorite Cashemere Mist.

If my H. magnifica smells bad when it blooms, I will definitely be gifting it to someone else!
