those are amazing... do those exist in nature, or are they strictly a nursery creation?
I don't know.
PalmBob, what does nursery creation mean? I was looking at this page and found it said "Origin: Garden origin (Nursery produced cultivar)."

I think the 'normal' form of some Eulychnia (assume its castanea) is 'stressed' in cultivation (maybe the meristem is damaged purposely) in such a way that the plants start growing like this... but the chances of this happening in nature are pretty small. That is only a guess.
There is a rumor that this monstrous form had been collected in the wild by an Austrian in the 80s and eventually brought to the nursery of Albert Plapp, who propagated and distributed it.

Unfortunately the Plapps can't remember the name of that man.
About 21 years ago it was introduced to the Städtische Sukkulenten Sammlung, Zürich by Schatzl from the Botanical Garden, Linz in Austria.
