Dischidia pods

Vernon, BC, Canada

Hi everyone,

I have several Dischidia and D. lividica has grown a huge ant pod (I guess that"s what is is). It keeps getting bigger and bigger. What happens to them eventually? It's sort of like all the energy of this plant (really just a cutting) goes towards this thing. Thanks.

Trish

My guess is that it'll pop eventually Trish. If you want to save the seeds, you might can lightly scotch tape it to save the seeds, or wrap it loosely in the foot of a panty hose or knee high stocking.

Thanks Christine,
It's gotten huge and has been growing for a while. I guess I should try Carol's scotch tape thing. It's still flowering but has quit growing while the pod is growing.

Do you mean a 'seed pod', or is it a 'pouch' developing that you're seeing?

I believe it's a pouch. It's huge and I'm curious to what will happen to it. It is the size of a large cherry tomato.

You're sure its not D vidalii or Major?

Hi Dominic,
It looks like D. vidalli, flowers look the same as well as the pouch. It is from Paul Shirley that I got in a collection and labelled as D. lividica. I will post a picture tomorrow if I can.

These pics are of the variagated version, but theres a totally green version too. Its a lovely plant if it is the same and those arent seed pods on his photos, theyre bullate leaves, they grow like that, like balloons and ants nest in the wild inside them, the debris they leave inside helps the plants growth as it takes nutrients from it via roots inside the bullate leaves. The flowers are small and in little bunches, but quite vibrant red
