New to Hibiscus

Boise, ID(Zone 5b)

I just bought my first hibiscus, Nairobi, and I am trying to find any information about the plant or how to care for it. Not a lot of luck so far.

Does anyone know how tall and wide this plant gets?

We are hot and dry here in Idaho with alkaline soils. Zone 5b or 6a, depending on the year. I was planning on putting the plant on the east side of my house. It is more protected from wind and weather and everything blooms earlier there.

Anyway, are there any amendments I need to make to the soil for PH?

Fertilizers? high nitrogen, low nitrogen, etc? How often?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

The only 'Nairobi' that's listed in Plant Files is a tropical hibiscus, so assuming that's the one you have, you'll be best off keeping it in a pot so that you can move it indoors or into a greenhouse for the winter. Tropicals can get 6-8 ft or so, but keeping them in a pot will make them grow slower and you can also prune to keep them smaller. In terms of fertilizer, they don't like a lot of phosphorus so look for something with a low middle number. When you have it outdoors for the summer, it will probably do best in an area that gets some sun, but has some shade during the hottest part of the day. And they're pretty thirsty, so it will need to be watered regularly.

Thank you for the information. I'm disappointed that I don't get to plant it outdoors. Oh well. I love the color.

If I bring it in the house, will it go dormant or still produce flowers?

I'm not sure if indoors is enough light for it to bloom, but if you keep it in a bright window maybe it would. I put mine in a greenhouse for the winter and they do bloom there but the light in the GH is stronger than it would be indoors. It won't go dormant though, you can at least keep it awake and green and ready to bloom again when the weather gets warm and you can put it back outside.
