I've seen this duck through the summer at some local ponds in Prospect Heights, IL. I can't tell what it is. It is always alone and I can never get a good picture because it is so far in the middle of the pond.
It dives from 3 feet to about 20 feet underwater. I've seen it fly to the top of a tree and sit. If I try to take it's picture at the top of the tree it will fly away.
Also, it swims almost submerged under water. Many times you can only see it's neck coming out of the water because it swims so low.
It doesn't look like any duck I can find on the internet.
