I checked my book and looking at the bill it looks like a female Northern Shoveler but the color under the wings is confusing me because the book does not show this. Am I correct?
Thanks

CLOSED: Duck id help needed
Here's another duck that I believe is the American Black Duck - male. My book shows a different color bill and feet though but all else looks the same to my eye. Am I correct here? But after further review now I thinks it's a female Green-winged Teal. Help
Thanks

Correct on all of them, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Hooded Merganser and American Wigeon, except for one thing . . . they're all males in non-breeding ('eclipse') plumage. In the late summer to early autumn (roughly July to October) male ducks shed most of their brightly coloured plumage and look like the females, except for a few wing feathers (such as the blue ones on the drake Shoveler) which still enable sexing with care. The bill colour also usually stays the same (e.g. with Mallards, drakes at this time of year still have yellow bills, not brown like females).

Ooops! Correction - after another look, thinking #2 is a Blue-winged Teal, not Green-winged. Note particularly the white spot at the base of the bill.

Thanks Resin. It's kinda of difficult for me when the book doesn't show both the summer and winter, breading and non-breading species.
Resin you are correct on the Blue-winged Teal. I checked another photo and can see some blue in the wing.
Thanks
