When is Super Dew Honeydew melon ripe?

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

I stare and stare at this melon. It seems more white than green. The tendril is almost brown. It's quite heavy. I think it might still be growing.

I thought I had Early Dew instead - it sort of slips when ripe. This is a new variety for me and I don't know if it's supposed to get a yellow tone when ripe.

I fear I will succumb to impatience and temptation and pick it too early.

Super Dew is a 1999 Seminis product that I have not tried. They apparently farmed it out to United Genetics. Neither United Genetics nor vendors like Burpee give very much information. It is listed as a midseason melon which would make it a week or so later than Earlidew. No information on whether or not it slips, but the skin remains off white when ripe. Non slipping honeydews are tricky, I usually depend on a combination of time elapsed and a slight sponginess to the blossom scar. Honeydews hold on the vine for a considerable time, so I probably wait longer than absolutely necessary.

If I were going by days, it would have been ripe 2 weeks ago. The cold weather we've had all year is holding everything back.

Last year the Charentais were ripe on this date, but this year, not a sign of it. And they're ealier than the Dews.

Shoulda got Earlidew like I planned.

I grew Superdew last year but I can't remember if it slipped or not. I should take notes! Like Farmerdill said, it will be off-white when ripe, no green at all in the rind. I remember it had a great taste.

Thanks, Calalily! No green at all in the rind.
