Planted 2 of theses about 4 months ago. Both were in bloom when planted. They look AWESOME great growth nice huge leaves. No new flowers.I did cut them back after bloom was over. How often can i expect them to bloom?TY:)
Night Blooming Jessamine bloom frequency?
I've never had them bloom more than once a year, but I've only had small ones so once they're older I'm not sure if they bloom more. My other Cestrums all bloom pretty much continuously but the nocturnum always seemed more reluctant to bloom. They also seem to be slower to get established than my other Cestrums--I had one at my old house and it was on its 3rd year in the ground before it bloomed, and I have one here that is now in its third year in the ground so I'm hoping to finally see some blooms. (Blooming when you planted them doesn't count--I've had tons of shrubs that were blooming in their pots when I bought them, then once you plant them they take a year or two to get going again). Hopefully yours will take off faster than mine have (I live in a very dry climate and I'm very stingy with water, so in your area they may move faster), but if it does take a while to get blooms again don't give up on them.
I have yellow, purple and white - two in the ground and one in a pot - they have bloomed all summer - they are 2 years old.
The purple one for sure can't be night blooming jasmine--it only comes in one color (sort of an off-whitish shade). I'd have to see the yellow and white ones to know if those are it or not, but the purple for sure isn't. They are probably other species of Cestrum--I've got a bunch of other species in yellow, orange, purple, pink, and they all bloom pretty much nonstop, it's just Cestrum nocturnum that seems to be more reluctant to bloom for me.
Yep, you are right - it's Cestrum x cultum 'Cretan Purple' - it was sold at a local nursery as purple night blooming jasmine - I will let Ashley, (the nursery owner) know, so she can label it as such.
I checked the tag on the white plant - it is Cuphea hybrid.
The yellow one is DEFINENTLY Cestrum nocturnum - it is incredibly fragrant.
I have Cretan Purple too, it's a gorgeous plant and blooms almost nonstop for me. I can see how the nursery could have been confused since it's in the same genus, but I've never noticed any fragrance at all let alone the gorgeous fragrance of the NBJ! I'm glad to hear your NBJ blooms so much--it gives me hope for mine that maybe it's just because it's still young that it doesn't do much. Or maybe it's the climate--guess I'll have to wait a few years and see!
Got a couple blooms on my NBJ last week...enough to make me stand out there at night saying ahhhhhhhhh. Hopefully will get a good flush early fall like I did last year....such an amazing scent...I LOVE her!!
One of my 2 NBJ's is beginning to bloom.Awesome scent.I am however noticing a fair amount of yellowing leaves in the center/lower portion of the other.Perhaps it needs some thinning out. It's rainy season here and they've become very dense?
I've seen them get to 8 ft high and as wide in Fl. Perhaps a very low nitrogen fertilizer can help encourage them to flower. I like to use a 2-10-10 granular.
My NBJ sends out a couple (maybe 3-4) sets of blooms a summer. I have noticed that the bigger the plant, the more it blooms and also if it is overwintered in the grhouse and has full sun/warmth all winter, it will bloom more in the summer. Its one of my most favorite scents-at least until a brug starts to bloom, or one of the sambacs start, or a citrus blooms etc....lol
