Can wind blow chickens out of trees?

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

We have 80+ mph winds here right now.. extreme downpours.. & large hail..

i spent an hour trying to dislodge chickens from the trees after the dog attack. Now I'm wondering.. does anyone know if wind will blow them out? I know it sounds silly.. but they were hanging on for dear life when i was trying to dislodge them. It was like getting a sticky kids fingers off a toy they want real bad.. get one finger off.. & then one goes back.. it was useless. Plus there were chickens so high up & couldn't get at them even by climbing. i tried everything i could think of. so now.. they are sitting out there in the trees.

will they still be there in an hour when this blows thru? Can strong winds blow then out or will instinct cause them to let their little legs break before they fall out? and yes I"m honestly curious if anyone knows.

I don't know--but a lot of people report their chickens spending every night roosting in trees--and peacocks and wild turkeys do too. What kind of trees are they? The leaves and swaying of the branches probably do a lot to break the force of the wind.

neighbors chickens roost every night.. except those in bad weather & his go into the coop. Soft maple trees with are the equivalent of tissue paper in wind.. an oak tree.. & some funny shorter ornamental tree next to the house. I've got limbs down out of some of the maple trees i heard fall. these trees don't block much wind.. they whip around pretty good. I know normal birds live in trees.. but they are so small & u find them blown out of trees around here after storms... its mostly just a question that came up & ZZ said to put it here & see what answer I'd get.

Trees, even when they are whipping around, absorb a lot of energy....until they break.

Let us know what happens.....

LOL i am NOT going out in the dark to see if they are still there.. I'm sure they will be up & moving by daylight. I just was mostly curious.. i like to ask too many questions. Its one of those things you always hear about Cows, horses, pigs, sheep & goats in high winds around here but you never hear about chickens or peacocks.. so i kinda just wondered what happened to them.

Greykyttyn: I'm rolling on the floor, I'm sorry but you are just to funny for me. I know you care, and are serious. but you are the funniest serious lady I have ever met. I suppose if wind can blow trees down, then they can also blow birds out of them. Maybe the chicks will just stick with the tree and ride them to the ground. Sorry darling but lord help me you are just to funny for me. Good luck and keep us posted. Howie

Greykyttyn,

How far are you from Sarcoxie? My DH's aunt & uncle live near there so was wondering if they are getting the same weather. We are very happy to live in the usually mild Pacific Northwest. It was 97 yesterday, I'd much rather have heat than what you are getting now. Hope all is well with your chickens.

I am... 17 miles from Sarcoxie. I'm sure they got bad weather. maybe not what we got tho bc this kinda stayed here & south of us a bit.

Its... 80 today. cool.. needed jeans bc it was slightly damp fall feel to the air. Its nice. I'm looking forward to fall.

All Chickens survived... still in the trees at 6am. refused to come down for breakfast.. idk when they finally got out bc i left on a trip soon there after.

I don't know about chickens, but my peacock stayed in the tree through 60 mile an hour winds a few weeks ago. After it was all over he let out a scream of triumph. No animal would hang on till it's legs broke, the muscles in it's legs and feet are not that strong.

I'm glad everything survived the storm Greykyttyn.. I sure was worried last night! Hope it's over now..

and the chickens are all okay.
