Fuchsia 'Cardinal'
Very nice Fuchsia. Any experience of hardiness outside?
So far so good!
It is listed by the Northwest Fuchsia Society as being a tested very winter hardy upright fuchsia in USDA Zone 8. Which means it should be able to deal with 10-20F without any protection. All of my fuchsias are uprights and all of them must be able to survive freezing weather as they are all outdoors year round.
This one is one of the most vigorous fuchsias I have ever grown and I have a collection so far of 114 varieties.
This coming winter will be only the second one with me for this variety, so I am certainly hoping it does well. Most years, my upright fuchsias will still be blooming even if it does get down close to freezing temperatures. Which isn't until January, so I often have all of color even in December.
Thanks for that Pedrick, I have always loved Fuchsias but have no room for indoor types, pretty though they are. I overwinter outside as well, and cultivars such as 'Alice Hoffman' and 'Mrs Popple' will survive without problem. Often with us, it is the dampness of the winter rather than the cold. Frost is generally down to -7 or -8 c (not sure what that is in F.) for a few days in Winter but the last really big freeze (-15) was back in 1983.
Good luck with all your Fuchsias, it is some collection.
Thanks! I was bad this morning and went out and got 10 more.......
I hear fuchsias are a big thing on your side of the Atlantic, ha, ha! I would love to see it someday. Ireland in particular. Both of my grandmothers are from Ireland, like millions of other transplanted Irish, I long to see it for myself someday.
Naughty naughty, lol, but so understandable. The fuchsia hedges, particularly in the south and west, are covered in flower at the moment. Along with the common Montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora) it certainly brightens up the countryside in August.
I knew there had to be somewhere that fuchsias were grown as hedges! Here in the states, when you say "fuchsia" the first thing to come to everyone's mind is a hanging basket that looked beautiful until it fried in the heat or froze in the cold!
I am having a difficult time redirecting that mentality back to upright hardy fuchsia bushes! Which is the only kind I grow. Now I know I must come and see them in August one of these years soon ;-)
Hi again,
Try www.kathleenmuncasterfuchsias.co.uk who has one of several Nat. Plant Heritage collections of hardy fuchsias for the U.K.
I don't know if the same cultivars will survive with you but 'no information is useless'.
Cheers.
