I've tried looking it up and I found two examples exactly the opposite of each other, so I decided to ask people who know!
A friend of mine took this shot of a butterfly on an asclepias tuberosa I'd given her. Is it a Monarch or a Viceroy?
Monarch or Viceroy?
It is a monarch. Here is a pic of the Viceroy to see the difference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viceroy_Butterfly
Pretty picture by the way.
Here is a picture of each of the wing http://bugguide.net/node/view/43528
Yes, Monarch no doubt.
Thanks!
Y'know, the WORDS on that 2nd link telling me to look for the extra stripe on the wing are the best way to remember it.
Now I'm on my way to look up the "Queen" butterfly, as I understand they are similar as well.....
But now that I see THEIR picture, I don't understand why anyone would think so!
As long as the butterfly has it's "head" in view, I go by the white "chin" that the Viceroy has and the Monarch doesn't...and the Viceroy is smaller too. I had a side by side pic of both from back in June, but it was so blurry because it was so windy that day...
And then of coarse, one can see the different pattern on the wings. I started a thread and posted a pic of a Viceroy here in the forum awhile ago showing the "white chin"...here's the link...
