Tropicman, I love your pictures :) Your zone is a lot warmer than mine! I bought an old ratty wreath, I noticed it was decorated with lotus seeds in their original pods! I just had to have it, LOLOL I have a few lotus still growing in containers, and I ill put them into the 16ft deep end :) Hope by
next summer I will have some nice lotus :)

Tootsie,I wish you luck!
But I hope that was 16 inches not feet!!!

Bay City, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh, hee.hee, yes your right, I put them in just a few feet of water in the summer. For winter tho, I drill holes in their containers so I can thread the pots and attach them with strong contractors orange string to the metal poles. Some times I have so many pots, the last 8 or so, go deep down into the 16 ft. side! I usually run out of more shallow water, so deep they go, and oddly enough, they are just fine :)

I will tell you that it is no small feat to have to get into the much and pull and tug and dig and just about yank your guts out to get a piece of that stuff!!

if you put the lotus in a pond how deep should it be? Is it like a water lily and can go deep or should it stay like on a shelf?

I am just starting seeds but I really need to know as I have one that is ready to go into the pond.

Once upon a time, I was going to do lotus. Then I decided that I really did not have the room - lotus get so very big.......

So I planted hibiscus instead.......This guy is hardy in my zone and comes up every year......

If just seeds I'd stay within 6inches of the water level.
But full grown plants depth to a foot of water surface.
During the winter move the pot to the deepest part of the pond,2ft or more to keep from freezing.

I will kind of jump in here if no one minds. I have pretty good luck with my lotus. Unfortunately it isn't in full sun, but it blooms well and shades the fish and pond nicely.

Tropic man-nice post.
Helen-nice picture-aren't lotus supposed to be in full sun? I dug a bog in March and planted my TWL lotus' in there and while I have the leaves-no flowers yet. Mine is in full sun.

BTW: Lotus in cold climates need to go deep but have to do it gradually. If you start seeds and are in a cold zone like mine (5a-Chicago) you have to place a tuber on top of the surface of the water with at least an inch or two of water over soil and the roots will reach down and anchor the plant on it's own. Then you can slowly lower it into a pond. As the leaves grow upward the plant can go deeper. I have read and heard online here and in books that lotus do not tolerate water going into their shoots and it could kill the plant. BUT I have seen a lot of abuse by my puppy (he stole my original lotus tuber 7 plus times and chewed it and it wasn't until the 8th time the tuber died. He chewed it and split it into many parts and still it took a lot of abuse before it gave up). Also, I know someone locally here that has a mature clump of lotus in their pond and to them it is like a weed and in the fall they just rip out the leaves aggressively and follow none of the rules and the plant continues to live happily.

BTW: Tropicman and Helen and Greg: What types of lotus' are in your pictures?

Thank for the info guys I think I will just leave my little one in the pot I have it in and not put it in the pond just yet.
It is under about 4 to 6 inches of water in the pot so that should be good. I am up to 4 leaves so I am excited now I will
have to come up with a bunch more pots for the seeds that are sprouting.
