Wow that is fast! But isn't that Pride of Barbados? Or is that YET another name?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I tried the seeds, Don, but they didn't sprout - thanks for sharing a picture with us. Would you care to start some seeds for me???

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I've generally only seen Mexican BOP used to refer to Caesalpinia mexicana. This plant is Caesalpinia pulcherrima, which is usually called either Bird of Paradise (plain BOP, not Mexican) or Pride of Barbados. Common names can be very confusing though and lots of people will use lots of different names for the same plant.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yep POB,heard it called lots of things.
Kay you have any seeds?
Lazlo sent me about a dozen,I gave some away, and only 3 sprouted, there growing about a 1/3 of what this one is growing, same soil and right next to each other.

E3,yep it is Caesalpinia pulcherrima,but I can't say it or spell it!!!LOL

Vieques, PR

Looks a good bit different from my pulcherrima.

Do they always have yellow ones along with the red ones??

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

MMMMMMM 8 months.. ...I'm usually pretty good at getting things flowering.. I've had mine growing for 3 years or more... now it's just about 3' tall. and no flowers yet...
I did just returned from Costa Rica... and have a dozen seeds... they had pods that had just darkened up.. the seeds were still green inside... so I don't know if they will sprout at all ...what do you think...
looking for flowers on the old one all of the time

Gainesville, FL

They drop on the ground and sprout here so you will probably have luck

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Mine is about 3ft tall, but I feed it every other week, full sun,its in a gallon pot.
Did you pick the pods or find them on the ground?
You just never know what will pop,but green, well you can try.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

well.. the black pods.. that were on it at first.. were picked.. they had brown seeds inside... over the next few days the green pods left had turned a brown.. then over another few days...up to my return.. day.. the pods were a dark brown by then ...They came off the tree... there were green seeds.. then..with a hint of brown on them..
yes.. I'll give some of them a try..
anyone wish to trade for some of them

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Those are awesome!! I have tried several times, and they sprouted, but soon fizzled, after about a foot of growth. I don't know what happened.
Congrats on yours!!
Janet

They turn completely red after a day or so,and loses the yellow!

Gordonhawk,I'd love to try to pop some!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Thanks

tropicman, that is very pretty, i like the yellow and red. I got mine to start last year, planted it in the ground. Dug it up for the winter but it did not make it through the winter in my sunroom. should have probably left it in a container.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I had the yellow one it came back 2 yrs in a row planted in the ground, this would have been its 3rd yr if it came back,I think the dry winter we had played a role in it's not returning,I have this one in a pot and it will stay in a pot.

Philadelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

They grow super fast in the right conditions. I saw them available as annuals ("temperennials") in 4" this year for the first time.

I've grown them planted in ground in the greenhouse- they're awesome and respond really well to pruning.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

My 2 fter has flower buds now! Woo Hoo!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Ya, we are blessed!

San Tan Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

I usually cut our 2 back to the ground in spring and by October they are about 10 ft. tall. One of them I cut back to about 3 feet this year and it's higher than the roof right now and constantly covered in blooms.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

10 ft ,must be just beautiful in full bloom!!!!

Houma, LA

I got a yellow one blooming right now and I love it. Still in a pot but will put in ground in the spring. Will take a photo tomorrow if its not raining all day.

Not the best picture (too sunny) but you can see it is higher the roof. This is the one I cut back to about 3 feet this spring.

Gorgeous!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yea, they grow like WEEDS here in the Phoenix area... easily sprouted from seeds...

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I have to ask: how come no one has any plants to trade if 'they grow like weeds'.

Houma, LA

Here's my yellow today.
