I sprayed quite a few large areas of our yard yesterday with Sedgehammer (ouch $$$$). We have neighbors that don't mow and their weeds just keep on giving! Grrrr. Anyway, it's very pricey per gallon ($25 at Earl May). Has anyone used it before, does it work and where can I buy it cheaper??? Help, this stuff is taking over my backyard!
SedgeHammer for Nutgrass? Does it work?
Unfortunelay, Collies are an invasive breed and once they've entered your heart CANNOT be removed. I would try love and see if that works.
We don't have one now but years ago we had a tri-color named Thompson. Thompson Tri-Baby.
I grew up with collies too--had several of them when I was growing up and my parents still have one. But I've "downsized" to Shelties now! LOL
Sorry don't know anything about the sedge killer--I hope it works for you!
Very cute! They look like twins! I have a picture somewhere (hard copy though, not electronic) of my tricolor sheltie next to my parents' old tricolor collie--not quite as cute as this one but a similar "mini me" effect. It reminds me of a funny thing that happened one time when I was walking my sheltie at a park--a little kid saw him and shouted out to his mom "Look mom, someone left Lassie in the dryer for too long!"
ROTFLOL "...in the dryer too long." I miss Tommy. They are such wonderful companions.
And, no, I don't know anything about SedgeHammer. Hopefully someone will come along who does.
Don't know anything about collies, so I'll answer about SedgeHammer...
I've used it for the past 2 years on my lawn, my front yard was very heavily infested with spots in the back yard. While you can use it this time of year to kill the current plants, they say it is better to start in early/mid June (before the solistice) in order to also kill the 'nuts' the roots are producing at that time. Now the nuts have matured and the plants aren't feeding them, so they won't get much of the SedgeHammer. But when they sprout next year... BAM!
Last year, the first year I used it, it was very easy to identify the sedge in my lawn as I sprayed in June. After about 1 week, I noticed it was starting to yellow, and after 2 weeks turning brown. By the middle of July most was gone (I missed a few spots spraying).
This year, I had to guess as to where the sedge was last year, since there were only a few spots where I could tell where it was, those were mostly the spots I missed last year, in the areas I had sprayed last year the plants were less robust (old nuts?). It killed the plants I saw as well as last year (and of course, once I finished spraying, I found a new spot that I had missed).
One thing you want to make sure of is that you keep it on the lawn. I got some overspray onto an iris and a daylily plant. The iris had already finished blooming, but the new growth didn't quite look as healthy as others. The daylily, on the other hand, had definite leaf yellowing and the flowers on the side that got the spray were small, deformed, and the stalks were shorter.
I also purchase it at a local nursery (Lincoln NE), and I got it for $15 a packet there. Runs around the same at another local nursery I checked, haven't checked EM price here.
Thank you Cybrczch! I am glad to know that it worked on your lawn. I sprayed the areas heavily on Saturday and it rained Sunday heavily, but the packets say the rain shouldn't wash it off as I did use an adherent. Another DG member suggested Nutgrass Nihilator herbicide which I am going to research also. The stuff just grows like crazy here - each time it rains a new patch comes up. And yes, next year I will be ready with spray in hand at the first sign. What is EM price, I'm not familiar with that expression. Thanks again and if you ever want to know about collies, dmail me, ha! In fact, my boy goes to the nursing home tomorrow for pet therapy so am off to give him a beauty treatment! Thanks!!!
It's already starting to yellow - I've order more packets of the sedgehammer - I will win this battle!!! Thanks for the input!
Sorry so long to reply, EM = Earl May
And I would not hear the end of bringing a dog into the house from my 2 feline overlords LOL

Earl May was $24.99 each one gallon treatment - yikes! I found some online a bit cheaper, but haven't checked with Menard's or Lowe's yet. We have four feline overlords, that's a great name for them, and they live in our downstairs level - the dogs live in the upstairs level. The collie loves everyone so he can be with the cats, but the pekingese thinks they are just too much fun to chase so he can't terrorize them.
Pet therapy. How wonderful is that? I love it.
It is wonderful! Han and I took about five training classes just to socialize him with people and other animals. He's calm by nature and most elderly people remember Lassie from their kids growing up, and many here lived on farms as a child. He's quite the hit and we both enjoy visiting. You get a lot more than you give!
They had a cat that was brought around in the care center where my mother was. The look everyone's faces was priceless. Some people who you thought were unresponsive would sit up when Carl was there with Mr. Jones. Lots of folks underestimate the healing power of animals. I applaud you and Han.
Thank you for the compliment! It's a gift that gives back even more as you leave the nursing home so blessed from sharing your dog. I've seen residents who were living in their own world focus on Han and begin to function while he's there... it's amazing. Their faces brighten the moment he walks in the room. Han has brought me so much joy that I knew I had to share him! BTW, the sedgehammer is working and I am going to spray the whole front yard and kill every strand of it! Woohooooooo.
Oh, good. I may give it a try.
