Long Time Companions

Loudonville , OH(Zone 5b)

My poor old Silver Persian 20 year old brothers are in bad shape and I will probably take them both for their last vet visit this week. They came into the world together and it looks like they will go out together. It's killing me, but their arthritis has gotten so bad that I can't stand to see them suffer.

I went to look at some Silver Persian kittens that were advertised in the newspaper back in 1989. I saw a litter of 5 kittens in horrible shape. I ended up talking the woman down in price and bought the whole litter. After many trips to the vet I was able to save 4 of the five. I sold 2 as pets to friends and kept 2. The big heavy boned one I named Singer, since he purred all the time. The tiny frail runt got named Chrissy (short for Crystal's Cat) since he insisted on climbing on or sleeping under my cockatoo's cage (whose name was Crystal). The 2 brothers were as different as night & day. The big one was afraid of everything -plastic bags, storms, loud noises, strangers, etc. but has been my bed buddy for 20 years. That spot next to my pillow will be awfully empty. The little brother wasn't afraid of anything. He is a loner, never socialized with any other cats and only wanted a lap at his convenience. He stayed tiny & frail and let his brother eat all the food. They have been my constant friends and, in one way, even though it is harder on me, I am glad they will be crossing that bridge together.

Hope, the retired Gr. Ch. Burmese I have, is currently at the vet's office with a bad ear infection. I took her to the vet last Wednesday but by Friday morning when I got home from work, she was much worse. Her equilibrium was suddenly way off and, apparently sometime during the night she fell & broke her left lower canine. So I rushed her back to the vet and she has been there since Friday morning. Monday morning they are going to anesthetize her & take care of the tooth and flush out the ear so they can better see what is going on. All her blood work came back negative, so we will see. Seems like all my babies are falling apart at once.
