Crabapple jelly - preparation

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Just picked about 15 litres of crabapples. They are not mine and I don't know whether they were sprayed; so I'm washing them well.

But, does anyone know WHY all instructions say to cut the blossom end off? Does it affect the flavour of the juice?

My childhood recollection of my FATHER preparing crabapple juice for jelly was that he just threw everything into the pot and the apples went in whole (worms and all). Seems to me their jelly was fine.

Your thoughts please.

Ann
