How do they do this?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I have been purchasing these for sympathy gifts for several families who have lost loved ones this month. I kept one for myself. I am so excited with this because it is thriving and blooming as if it was in a pot of good soil. I wonder how they get the plant to stay on the lava rock and grow. Anyone know? They also have Neoregelia bromelaids on the lava rock. I am amazed and want to know how they do it. LOL

I have no idea how they do that, but it's amazing - just beautiful. I have always wondered how Bonsai folks do what they do, too!

Anthurium can live epiphytically. They just need sufficient water and can easily be fed with liquid fertilizer.

JBerger, what florist did you order them from? I would like to order one also for myself.

I ordered mine from Logee's Tropical Plants in CT.www.logees.com or 1-800-330-8038
It is listed as Hawaiian Volcano Plant and then they have one called the Neoregelia"Fireball" Hawaiian Volcano Plant that has Neoregelia bromelaids instead of Anthurium. I have not got that one yet, but it is on my list. My kids usually give me a gift certificate from Logee's a couple of times a year and that is when I love to get these
fun plants for the house. I have some potted anthurium here in the greenhouse and in the house and they bloom all year long. I just love them but still have not been able to propagate them. That is something I would love to be able to do. JB

JB, I think Logees is a great place to find cool, unusual plants.. healthy too. Sometimes they are small, but they always thrive once adjusted. I ordered my first brugmansia from them so many years ago. Now don't go getting me "started" on another plant. I've been drooling over their Fall 09 catalog for a few weeks.

I have started collecting gardenias from them. I have had wonderful luck with all that I purchased and they are growing like weeds. My real problem is with my bougainvillea, they seem to be growing, but not happy as the others. I think I will move them today and see if they do better. They even had fish emulsion...lol.

Thank you so much! I will give their site a look.

Don't mollycoddle bougainvillea they thrive on neglect (but not waterlogging). Full sun and baked earth.

Hi tropicbreeze, how nice to talk to someone so far away. I am not one to as you say mollycoddle plants. I do care for them but I do not have time to hold their little peddles and sing to them. Instead I put the radio on and go off and work. LOL Seriously, that is good to know that they will survive with my care(less) way of raising them. Do you know how to propagate them? I would love to know.

G'day JBerger, my interest is in getting rid of bougainvillea rather than propagating them. They're almost indestructible. But people do propagate them from cuttings. Some say that semi-hard wood is best, and dip them in a rooting compound.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I have only had one cutting grow. I thought there may be some secret Australian method.
Thanks and have a wonderful day. JB

How about the anthurium? I have one that I brought back from HI and it is alive but not happy. It continues to put out small leaves so I am assuming it is hungry. It came from a commercial nursery on the BI and I suspect it was addicted to constant fertilization while it was there. How often and how much and what should I be feeding this little one.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi ardesia, I seldom feed mine, but when I do they get the same as anything else, Fish Emulsion and/or Miracle Grow. Nothing special. Mine love the morning sun or just alot of good light and plenty of water. Hope this helps. JB

Thanks, I guess mine is just homesick right now. Hopefully it will get used to living here soon.

Maybe you should play it some music . My birds and flowers always have music going in their area. No, not in the greenhouse just yet, I am thinking about that. LOL Have a great day. JB

LOL, actually that has been suggested to me as a possible deterrent to deer.
