Almost 25 years ago a friend brought me a puppy that had been found and asked me to keep it for the weekend while they advertised to find the owner. Alex stayed for 16 years and when she went over the Rainbow Bridge I thought I didn't want another dog. I wanted to travel, see the worldl, not be tied down. Sure!
After about 9 months I went to the local humane society and this big black dog put her paw out and that was it! She looked a lot like Alex but where Alex loved water Shadow loved snow. Both were obviously black lab and maybe some curly coated something mixed in.
Shadow was the best dog in the world (I know you have one, too). Everyone who met her loved her. SHe had this laid back temperament, loved cats, dog, people, and was just happy to be with you. Last year during a routine vet visit she was found to have health problems and a visit to Michigan State University Vet Clinic showed two tumors in the liver and spleen. The decision was made not to operate since she was already 12 years old.
While at MSU, four different vets told me that Shadow was a Flat-Coated Retriever. Since I had never heard of the breed I did some internet research and found that every line of the description was spot on with not only Shadow, but Alex, too. They are very easy going, take the world in stride. The "Peter-Pan" of the dog world with love for everyone and a young attitude that lasts until they die. They are usually black or liver colored, a plummy tail and feathers of the legs. The coat is short but with a bit of a curl to it.
Shadow finally went over the Rainbow Bridge in early July of this year and I am going through doggie withdrawal. I can't imagine being without my furry companion.
I am making a dilligent search for another dog NOW and want it to be the same breed I have fallen in love with, this Flat-Coated Retriever. I am looking for an older dog and one that is either a rescue or turned back to a breeder for some reason. Older black dogs always have trouble finding home. Also, at 70 years old, I live a more sedintary life than puppy or young dog would need.
Anyone out there want to share stories of their Flat-Coat or know of one that is available? I have explored all options locally I know we all love to talk about our dogs!
