Can papaya seeds be saved until next spring? I just got a fairly decent tasting papaya (for this part of the country) and I would love to start the seeds but it is too late this year and I can't over winter any more plants or seedlings indoors.
Papaya seeds ?
Start them in a pot and keep them in a window until spring, when you can put them outdoors.
Sigh, wish there was enough space for more plants :-)
Guess you can't save those seeds???
Well, I would certainly try - you never know! I would lay them out on a plate and dry them, then put them in a paper towel and in a baggie, set them in the crisper drawer of the fridge and try when you are ready - who knows? When you are ready to plant them, pre-germinate them on a moist paper towel which you place in a baggie and keep in a warm spot. Keep us posted!
Good idea, I'll try that; what do I have to lose.
I've never tried storing them long term but have found that when they're dry they take longer to germinate but are otherwise okay. Since you're looking at something like 6 months I'd say they still should be good. Only thing is don't expect the seedlings to come out the same as the parent plant. Seeds don't necessarily carry identical traits.
Thanks, you are correct but a girl can hope can't she? LOL
Maybe I'll break down and start just a couple now. I kept one successfully through 2 winters but this last one did it in. It bloomed all the time but didn't have a mate so we never got any fruit.
I save mine every year...paper plates with paper towels...every spring they grow.
Kewl ! How early do you starft the seeds?
I use to wait until June, but lately the wild ones will start growing in early spring.
