Hummingbird feeders dripping

Cleburne, TX(Zone 8a)

First week or so our feeder was fine. Now drips out of the little flower outlets and makes an awful mess on white porch rails. Have not used feeders the last few years but it is hung in the same place on edge of porch as we used to have it years ago and didn't have this problem. (see red arrow on photo) Have never seen more than one hummer but one feeds on our feeder and flowers all day long.

Any suggestion as to what may cause the feeder to drip or how to stop it? Took one back to Lowe's and got refund but bought the same one again because it seemed to be the best design of the ones they had.

Thanks.

Hello Dogs -n Petunias!
I love Texas folks. Unfortunately, so many people purchase feeders manufactured by outsourcing. How sad that those people who make inexpensive feeders have never seen a hummingbird.

Your main problem is caused by expansion of air in the upper portion of the feeder. When a feeder is placed in direct sunlight, the space above the fluid heats up rapidly. Eventually air pressure forces the liquid out. Two suggestions for relief:
1. Move feeder to a shaded or partially shaded area.
2. Do an online search to find a quality feeder of similar capacity that is of the "Saucer design."
If you scroll down in the same forum, you will se an example of one type of feeder that I use.
this feeder is manufactured by ASPECTS CO. I believe all their products also have an ant mote.
Look under "Lots of hummers in Virginia." Other manufacturers of quality feeders are Perky Pet, Opus and Droll Yankees. I like that all of these products are American made.

Your explanation certainly makes a lot of sense because earlier in the year this feeder was causing no problems. Unfortunately, it is 100º even in the shade now and for that reason I've been only filling the feeder halfway and changing it more often. Hence, more air in the upper portion. Hated to waste syrup because we think we have just one little hummer who faithfully visits the feeder and plants on our porch all day long.

Will definitely be buying higher quality feeders but to finish this season, I'll just have to waste more, I guess.

Thanks for links to discussion on DG. In my previous DG search, did not find that. Almost wish there was a separate forum for hummers.

I would suspect that you have many more hummers in your area. If you select another feeder, as per suggestion, you might want to consider a small 3 hole "mini" model. These are relatively inexpensive and you may be able to take advantage of some competitive prices online.
As migration begins shortly, you will have many visitors.

Also, consider planting some xeric plants. These are desert plants and thrive in an arid climate.
If you have interest in learning more about our blessings of hummingbirds, flowers and children, you might want to Google my website. www.hummingbirdsand flowers.net Additionally, I am enjoying sharing my knowledge and experiences with others on DG. I have met a lot of wonderful people over the several years that I have been a participant. Now hurry up and treat yourself to a quality feeder. You deserve more hummers. Let me hear of your success.

Will definitely check out feeders on line.

Bought a Mystic Spires Blue Salvia a couple weeks ago and put it on the porch waiting to be transplanted and the little hummer found it within 30 minutes. I've put lots of Dallas Red lantana in the front so we can see it out the window and the hummer likes it too.

We're in North Central Texas, so terrible humidity and heat combined.

Will visit your website too.

Thanks for all the info.
