Pontotoc, MS(Zone 7b)

I looked out at my hummingbird feeders today to see this !!!

I didn't know until today that the praying mantis will kill small mammals and birds . Live and learn ! I wasn't very happy about it killing my hummer !!!

Yes, that happens more often than people think. Some of those mantises get quite big and they do have very strong arms and jaws. There are numerous photos floating around the web showing hummies in the grasps of mantises.

Although mantises are supposed to be beneficial insects I don't like them in my yard. When I find one it either goes underfoot or over the fence.

Sorry...sure do hate to see that happen to a hummer, but I've seen pics like that before. Makes me mad!

I move the mantis if I see them lurking around to close.

Oooh, that is a gruesome end to that poor little hummer.

I haven't seen that before, but I have seen the praying mantis getting my butterflies in their grasps.

yes, well I have played with them all my life and thought they were so neat. I will never feel the same way about them again !!!

I do hope that was his last meal!!
I don't like them also because they lurk on plants that the butterflies lay eggs on and eat caterpillars. They will catch large butterflies also.
