Clove went broody

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

IS there some way to mark the egg that's under Clove to make sure I never take it into the house? She's bound & determined she will sit on an egg. BUT she lets Pepper & another chicken in the box with her at times still & I don't want her collecting eggs like Nutmeg did. I don't need another baby but i am very tempted to leave this egg but only if I won't end up cracking one into the skillet & have a chickie come flying out. That's a quick way to end a meal. o & she will let me take eggs. She did hop out of teh coop yesterday & follow me clear to the house growling at me tho. Never attacks when i take them. But i don't want to upset her anymore. IF she just hatches out the silly chick them maybe she will be happy. help please?

i would just make a mark with a grease pencil or a regular pencil..that way you would know which one it is..i hope she hatches something out! lol
good luck

Make the mark dark and use a grease pencil--I tried a regular pencil and the hen's body seemed to wipe away the pencil mark pretty quickly.

I use a pencil... but I didn't' have to worry about her wiping them off cause she was in the house! It was fun having her in the house.. she was sooo comfy. :) Bless her heart.

Mom swears there will be no more broody hens in the house till next year or i have a bigger coop so they can go back to a secure place other than her sun room. So I'm kinda not mentioning I'm letting her set on one egg. I just accidentally missed it when i was gathering eggs bc ooo she was sitting on it. This is the 8th or 9th time she's tried to go broody.. i really don't want her raising a chick in the dead of winter when she can hide them easier bc i'm watching less so if i let her do it now.. maybe she will be happy till spring. I had marked Nutmegs eggs with a pencil as i candled them so i knew which ones i'd done.. i noticed she rubbed the marks nearly off too. Clove won't be near as comfy as Nutmeg was.. but she's just gonna have to deal with it if she wants a baby.

Thanks guys.. I'll go get a pencil this afternoon to mark them with.

I loved having mine in the house.. she sure wasn't any trouble... but then, I had how many babiez in here?? LOL

Mom swears there is too much dust.. too much chicken poo.. too much clucking.. too much.. chicken. But then i already have 3 cats, sometimes 4 or 5 cats in here & a dog. so i think she thinks the house is getting a little full.

The feather dust does really build up--I tend to move my chicks out when I start developing asthma and the furniture looks like it is encased in volcanic ash.

I have 5 dogs and a long haired cat--so I do know fuzzy build up.....

LOL volcanic ash.. thats a good one.. the problem is someone suggested I use peat moss in the box with instead of shavings.. bc i could just keep adding some & then could use it in the garden. well... she loved it. they loved it.. but i couldn't figure out where the peat moss was going till i looked up. the entire ceiling area of the sun room, curtains, windows, love seat, cobwebs was covered in a large amount of dirt.

With nutmeg in here I think it was just too much noise.. she was very noisy. She didn't smell or anything.. just was talkative.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

eew... LOL I got grossed out from the dust.. and couldn't get a "handle" on it till I moved them all out. I know, it was bad.. I only have a very small dog in the house.. I am terrible about dog or cat hair in the house.. so I can understand.

I wish I had a sunroom... that would be a chicken coop for sure. LOL

So clove went broody, well what about cinnamon, how's she doing? I love cinnamon especially in my hot water drink.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

Didn't have cinnamon.. had Ginger.. & Ginger started crowing.. called the raccoons who invited him over for dinner one night along with my Bella. :( I really need to work on finding a blue chicken to replace my Bella at some point.

How could you not have a cinnamon? I love cinnamon! You must get a cinnamon so I can dunk her in my hot water. When you get a blue you must call her cinnamon. OK! For me. Hay

a blue chicken can not be a cinnamon... it must be a reddish brown chicken.. Maybe i'll name one of my Welsummers that.. they still need names. Wish someone would come up with names for me. After naming 10 out of 38 I'm kinda at a mental block for names.

My darling blue chicken.. when i get her.. will be a Bella.. now.. what kind of blue chicken do I want? :) I think i'm doing a small mixed order from the hatchery next spring.. mom thinks matilda..(matt) needs some girl friends that look like him/her/it/not sure yet but sure looks like a polish roo.

OK Hay.. i named a chicken Cinnamon just for you! One of the Welsummer hens. :)

Thought you'd might like to know how Clove is doing. 21 days was last... Thursday. No chick yet. I think the egg is bad. Only problem.. she's been calling for her sis Pepper to come babysit the egg while she goes out gallivanting around the yard to eat.. she's gone like... 10 minutes.. but Pepper sits there so happily on the egg.. then i started really watching while we were painting the coop tuesday.. Pepper is laying eggs while she sits there & I can't tell which egg Clove was sitting on! She was on one of Peppers eggs anyways. What I thought was soo cute has become a headache. one egg is bad.. two eggs are.. new. She's def still broody. She won't get off the nest..

Oh no, how sad! Sympathy.

I stole Clove's eggs the other night bc i was afraid of one exploding. I candled them just to see.. unfortunatly it was the next day that I candled them... one of the new eggs was fertile. :( now i feel awful.

but Clove flew up on top of my head at feeding time this morning to say hello. I think she is a bit happy to be out & about with her sister. so at this time no babies.. need to get to the neighbors & tell him that too.. i keep forgetting or i may be raising a chick of my own.
