This tree came up in an empty trough I had in the yard. I thought it might be a cottonwood but wanted to double check it. We don't have any close to us, that I've noticed. I'm not a great fan of them because we had one behind our house in Lewisville and I got so tired of skimming the pool when it released all that fuzz. I put it in a pot and it's really doing well. Maybe I'll trade it for something at the roundup!

Tree idenity
It is Chinese Tallow, a very pretty but very invasive tree,

Thank you Josephine. I knew you'd know. I'm going to look it up on plant files to help me decide what to do with it. I first noticed it last fall and it's already 5 ft. tall!
Oh my, doesn't sound too good.
Ever notice how many invasive species were brought over and promoted by the government? And yet they wonder why there is not much trust!
Well, now, just why wouldn't you trust our government??? Don't you believe "they" have our best interrests at heart??
Well...for the most part, not at all!
Me, neither.
Be careful what you say....they may be watching us!
Gotcha!
You mean like they brought Kudzu over for erosion control?? That went well didn't it.
Who brought Wisteria?
Mimosa trees are everywhere around here. They're in the woods, along fence rows everywhere!
As gardeners we are the worst at spreading the invasive plants and yes I am as guilty as anyone ,the Mimosa mentioned is a good example ,I remember as a child only the rich had Mimosa trees and my Mother was crazy to get her one ..Nowdays they will just come up anyplace..I have one growing in my yard that just volunteered and I don't have the heart to cut it ..
My kids are about to move into a new house. The builder put the usual plants in but there's nothing in the back yard and it's really big. I thought this tree might be OK for them as long as they keep it away from any foundation and guess they could mow down the suckers. What do you guys think?
Why put in something problematic? I recommend Bigtooth Maple!
I would definately look at something native and non-invasive. Just my 2 cents. I know before research I have planted things that I regret later.
I tend to look for double duty trees - shade plus fruit or nuts...if not for people then for wildlife.
That reminds me that as of the last few weeks the squirrels have been eating away at the green pine cones and some tree with huge round nuts on it. They are so messy that the deck stays covered. When they finish one of the pine cones it looks like someone's eaten an ear of corn and part of the cob too. If we're sitting out they just keep on eating and dropping it right on our heads.
My two cents worth is that there isn't any tree that is not messy in some way or other ..Case in point is a large oak accross the street in the spring the catkins blow unto my car and sidewalks and stain everything they touch,in the fall the leaves pile up arond my doorway and in late winter the acorns fall sounding like hailstones against the house ..In my yard I have Sweet Gum trees and a three season battle with those monsters, but in the summer it is a great tree and quite beautiful....
Sweet gums are so messy. we have two near the deck. I find those seeds everywhere and in everything. And then the ones I don't find start growing everywhere. Can't go barefooted around here.
I'd run from the sweet gum too. The seed balls can become missiles when mowed over and we have had two large sweetgums come down in winds due to hollow or rotten cores. Right now, we have a couple more that need taking out.
For their new backyard, I'd look for a nice shade tree that is quick growing. Not sure that I could make a good recommendation tho.
Incidently, I have two seedlings of these Chinese tallows that the birds must have delivered. I'm fixing to take the loppers and lay them low shortly now that I know what they are. Thanks for the ID.
how about a Mulberry I have a couple, one is a white Mulberry one is a Texas Mulberry and they are fast growers and as far as the mess it is only one week each year and not too bad at that ..the worst invasive I have is Black Locust and there is no getting rid of this pest ,comes up in the lawn ,garden, thru the boards on the porch or a crack in the sidewalk...
