As I begin the redesign phase of my pond, I'd like to see some inspiration pictures of what others have done to get some ideas of how I want my new (bigger) one to be. I know I've seen some here and there, but it's hard to sift through each thread to see if there are pictures, as I know they are dispersed throughout different topics. If you don't mind, could all the pond owners post a picture of their creations, please as they have time? I'd be most appreciative!
Also, if anyone has a website that has a lot of pictures of ponds (residential vs commercial), please share it as well.
Post Pictures of Your Pond Please
Hi jlj I just put a pond in this year, & it worked out ok. I've got 2 small collecting ponds at the top that flow into the main one. I think I'll re-work the waterfalls next year and add more plants, but I do like it. I'm out ther everynight, hanging out with the frogs. I went through a lot of books to figure out how to go about it. The picture attached was taken about a month ago. I plan on taking a few more this week as things have grown quite a bit. I'l get them posted asap.
Thanks much for sharing. I have two already; just getting ready to redo the area they are in and make on larger pond, so I want to see some others to make notes about things I'd like to have or do with it before I do it (which I didn't do when putting in the other two).
I'll post as I go along. I have 3 smaller ponds now, but am going to add one that's about 30 x 20. It will be about 3 feet deep, my koi need more space! This one will have a bottom drain, which the others have not.
I'm curious, what difference does having a bottom drain make? (I mean that question literally; not sarcastically). I've read about these before, but not familiar with the purpose or benefit. Can someone please explain?
Very nice, dbsmith! I wish I had enough land to have that size pond and set-up. Unfortunately, I wouldn't have a back yard left, and the dogs would not be happy!
The bottom drains keep any sludge from accumulating on the bottom (Fish waste, organic matter, etc) That's where all of the bacterial problems come from. Anything that sinks to the bottom gets sucked into the filter.
dbS2- I love the little building! What an artistic design!
Beautiful pond dbsmith. I also love the building. I'd have to re-locate a lot of my perenial gardens to have one that large. Maybe one day. My bottom pond is about 5' x 10', & 32" deep. I know it's not deep enough to keep my fish in it for the winter, but I was sick of digging. A lot of rock. Here's another view with the waterfall/stream.
Does anyone have any "plans" for how a bottom drain works and how it would be installed? What do you do ... periodically "flush" some of it down then top off the pond?
Here's a great thread with LOTs of pictures of beautiful ponds. Hope this helps...maybe this should be a sticky!

I just re-did my one year old pond and had a bottom drain installed and it was dug it deeper and removed all the stones from the bottom. I kept having problems with my fish's health-they were constantly sick and dying because the water didn't get flushed out enough. Even with huge water changes, vacuuming out the bottom weekly nothing helped. I had a 2500 gallon pond that was 3.5 feet deep. I now have approx. a 5 foot deep pond (5000 gallons) with an aerated bottom drain). The aeration really helped on a few very hot days last week. A friend of mine with a 3 foot deep pond had a few of her larger fish die from the the heat levels (and hot nights). My fish are finally swimming around happily and I haven't had to vac the pond or do any water changes all summer. The fish are nearly hand feeding as well. A big difference from last year. I only wish I would have insisted on the drain in the first install . . . oh well, live and learn. I will have to post pictures later.
holy fish fins!!! you all have beautiful water ponds :) You need not look at any other creations! I would love to have 1/2 your talent! Just wonderful! I have a clay bottom pond. It was here when I first bought the house, DH got ahold of a hydro unit and make it wider and longer :) Such a strange summer we have been having. So much cool temps, water in pond, just kept evaporating :( Deep end is still 16-18 ft. Koi and grrrrr, bullheads know to stay in the deep end unless of course I start walking towards the pond with their food in the pail, and they follow me to the spot where I throw their food :) Here are a few pics, Maybe next year I will stay here even longer and be able to get more done.
Thanks for the kind words - especially about the pump house my husband built for me. I love looking at everyone's pictures! Here's a view of the front of the pumphouse while DH was still in the process of building the lattice. We found the teak doors at a big antique show, and they were off by 1/2 inch!
Greg...Love your shubunkin, they're my favorite goldfish!
Beautiful Ponds everyone!
Tootsie, I thought your pix looked familiar so if this is not your website I would contact this person if they didn't ask permission to use your pix!
