I know this has been discussed before, but can't remember the outcome...did we ever decide what causes this or how to prevent it? I have a fairly large subcalva that came with perfect leaves, put out two more perfect leaves, and is now pushing out peach colored twisted and crumpled leaves...it's outside on my deck in dappled sun under a tree with the rest of my hoyas---the others all seem to be doing great, just this one is having a reaction to something...no sign of bugs or fungus...any thoughts?....thanks...

deformed leaves on h. subcalva
My patella has four leaves that look like they are transplanted from a compacta. It could be that the stem was up against the window as it was forming the leaf buds; it could be too much sun at the very moment of leaf bud formation. I know for sure there's no bugs or fungus; plants will always have deformed leaves, whether they are outside or inside. I think that nature decides that perfection is imperfect, and I just accept it.

Peach colored leaves? That sounds really pretty but I wonder if that could be caused by a mineral deficiency? Are you fertilizing regularly? I get wonky leaves sometimes but I can't say I've seen any twisted or crumpled, but most of my hoyas are all the generic, common EA plants. I will have to go look up subcalva to see what the foliage looks like on that one.
My plants stay outside on the screened deck almost year round, with the exception of maybe a few days here and there during winter if the temp's are predicted to drop below @ 40ºF. Sometimes I find what appears to be a deformed, whacky, weird looking leaf and don't have a clue why they grow that way. They seem healthy and are growing so I just chalk it up to life, LOL. I will have to go check around tomorrow to see if I can find any unusual, wonky looking leaves and take pictures!
H. subcalva has a habit of putting out wierd leaves every so often: for me, Mark Randal and other folks whose names I cannot remember. Just the nature of the beast...nothing wrong with your environment....
Thanks everyone....I feel better now :-)....I agree, the bronze leaves are beautiful and it's had those in the past, but these really are a light peach or coral color and all twisted and kinked up...either they'll green up or, more likely, fall off as they get bigger...maybe this is how H. "Hindu Robe" got started???
I just noticed this post, and this happened to one of my subcalva plants also. The one I got from DL awhile back never does this, but the one I got from Logee's threw out 2 leaves like the ones you are describing (not fully peach colored, but they had some peach-type color in the middle..and they were sort of "folded"). I heard about this phenomenon before I got the plant, so I wasn't worried when it happened. After the leaves matured, they looked more normal (hmmm..either that or they fell off, because all the leaves look fine now).
Gabi
Mine from DL does that...all of the time. i have a feeling it is a type of virus (as is variegation in a plant...not the contageious (sp?) kind...just the nature of hte beast. Some of us have it...sort of an aberration in some gene and they all have it.
I look at it as a bonus....love to watch those leaves!!!!
Since I wrote the first message the plant has put out two pair of perfectly normal leaves....the twisted ones are greening up quite a bit and do seem like they're going to end up more normal looking than I first thought...if they don't, I may just remove them...anyhow, I'm not worried anymore, although I can't help noticing that this fairly large plant had NO deformed leaves before I got it...hmmmmm....I don't know if this was originally a DL plant or not...anyhow, it seems happy, is growing rapidly, so, like Carol, I'm just going to enjoy watching those leaves :-)
Shelley
LOL Shelly ... don't know why, but for some reason reading your last post, about your plant having no deformed leaves when you first received it, made me laugh.
I got to thinking ... maybe plants are like kids. When I was a kid, my dad was in the military and we moved around a lot. Sometimes when you uproot kids from their friends and all they are used to, and move them to a new place ... they become rebellious and throw temper tantrums!
... they usually settle down after awhile though. ^_^
H montana does this for me sometimes..most of the leaves are fine. I find it happens when the temperatures cool
Dominic
I KNOW Lynn....sometimes I wonder if I'm sending out crazy plant vibes and making its leaves curl up LOL....anyhow, it's calmed down now, and hopefully will stay that way...
SR
Dominic---that's interesting....we've had an unusually cool, humid summer this year and for awhile there temps were only in the 70's during the day and getting down into the mid '50's at night pretty regularly...then it warmed up big time and lately temps have been in the upper 80's with lows in the 60's...maybe that IS the issue...I'll watch for that and see if I can notice a pattern...
SR
hmm .. I'd settle for some warped, deformed leaves if I could have cooler temp's. I was up at about 1:00 a.m. and it was still 80ºF outside, so humid all the windows were fogged up.
Here too, Lin. I walk out to the screened porch and have to wait for my glasses to clear before I can see anything. Just something inherently wrong about the humidity being higher than the temp! Ah well, that's FL for us, right? ;)
Barb
Barb, yep I guess it should be expected when we live in Florida but the older I get, the more I prefer a bit cooler summers, or less humidity really! I wouldn't mind the mid 90's if we didn't have to have this awful humidity. I don't like real cold weather, never lived anywhere that gets a lot of snow and ice, but on days like we've been having it sure sounds good! ^_^
