Again, this query comes because we just moved to the Pacific coast and I have several plants in the yard that are new to me and I haven't been able to identify. I think this is a Cape Mallow - it is a nicely rounded little shrub that is about 2 feet tall, but the blooms are very sparse. The leaves don't look like the Cape Mallow descriptions I have seen elsewhere. I'd really like to know how to care for this.
Is this a Cape Mallow?
Looks like Potentilla. Otherwise called cinquefoil. Tough unfussy perennials says Western Garden Book. And they are. They can be pruned after blooming to a shape that you like. Comes in cream, pink, red, yellow, orange and white. My daughter lived in Newport for five years. We loved to visit. Welcome to the west coast.

Definitely a Potentilla...I have a bunch. They pretty much take care of themselves very drought tolerant.. They get pretty scraggly if you don't shape them.
Ginger
And the deer don't eat them either.
