Gonna try something to discourage all my House Finches.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

I have an over abundance to house finches draining my feeders.

So, I made modifications to three of my tube feeders. I read that if you shorten the perches, then the House Finches can't alight, but titmice, chicadees and goldfinches can. So, I snipped off enough of the perch so that only 3/4 of a inch is left. I may end it shortening it so that 5/8 is left.

The pic is of one BEFORE I shortened the pegs. Now, they're a good bit shorter.

Has anyone else tried this.

I haven't tried that but I went to some upside down nyjer feeders to discourage house finch from hogging all the nyjer. They can't feed upside down.

I t appears to be working. On two feeders I only shortened the bottom pegs and left the top ones alone. One feeder has Sunflower seed chips in it, the other has Beetle Mania.

The HOFI flutter and flap around and eventually move to the top perches. Smaller (juvy, I guess) HOFI are still able to perch on the shorter pegs. I may take them down to 5/8 inch in length.

I'm gonna shorten all the pegs on my tube feeders. I also have quite a few the feeders that resemble lanterns and the HOFI are able feed at those.
