Are pole beans self-pollinating? I have JB attacking them!

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

Japanese Beetles and attacking my pole beans...... Are pole beans self-pollinating? I'd like to cover them with summer row fabric but afraid they need bees to pollinate. I don't want to spray an insecticide on anything I'm going to eat. :( Help!! Please!

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Common beans (P. vulgaris) are self pollinating. In a normal garden only cucurbits need pollinating insects.

Forgot to include this detail and don't know if it makes a difference.... My plants are all open pollinated seeds. Can I still cover them with row fabric??

Thanks for your help and patience with me Farmerdill. .....I sure wish I knew all you know about plants. Other than the JBs, my garden is doing awesome and has grown far beyond what I had imagined it would!!! :-D I'll post pictures soon! This being my first year planting a vegetable garden, you can imagine how excited I am. My DH is VERY impressed with my "Green Thumb"! ;) lol

All common beans are open pollinated, no hybrids available. It would not make any difference in protecting them from Japanese beetles. Whether a plant is hybrid or open pollinated only matters when you are saving seed for next year. Hybrids are deliberately cross pollinated so they don't usually come true.

Very good!! Thank you!! :) I will cover them with summer fabric as soon as I get home! .....Grrrrr....>:-[

Last year the city of Charlotte sprayed the area with Bt to kill canker worms. One good fallout was that there were very few JB or Mexican Bean beetles this year. And, so far, I've only seen one June Bug!
