I have a small variegated Brug that was labeled Night blooming variegated Charles Grimaldi. Can anyone tell me anything about it?
Variegated BrugCharles Grimaldi
Jamie is a variegated sport of Charles Grimaldi. Does your Brug get a lot of sunlight? The leaf edges look sun damaged and the leaves puckered. I'll have to go through Tonny's e-book, but it reminds me of a nutrient deficiency. How often do you fertilize and what do you use?
This is what my Jamie looked like in early May before the grasshoppers had their way with him. It was a cutting from below the "Y" and about 2-1/2' tall.

I had a crapemyrtle that gave it some shade during the hottest part of the day, but it had to be removed. I use slow release granules every three months and alternate miracle grow and miracid weekly. The critters stripped most of the leaves off and the new ones got the shock of no shade. Perhaps it would be best to relocate it, but it poses the "rock and a hard place" problem. To move now or wait till it cools off some....your suggestions are welcome.
I would be careful of weekly miracid. I don't think brugs will be liking that very much. You should have your PH checked.
Not weekly, bi monthly and a 50% strength, but I will certainly stop the Miracid. Thank you so much for the info. I will have to move this little guy to a slightly shadier spot, just trying to figure out when to move it.
You can get a cheap little pH meter to test the soil's pH. Miracid is best used only on plants that truly require acid soil.
If your zone 8 climate is anything thing like mine, hot weather can continue well into October. If you're careful not to disturb the roots too much, your little guy should be OK. Another alternative is to erect a temporary cover over the Brug until you move it. I would still check the soil pH. Soils that are too acidic interfere with nutrient uptake.
I have a buch of Japanese Irises, some liatris and heather in that area, and they are all acis soil lovers. I am going to figure out a new location for this poor baby. Every year we do a general soil analysis through cooperative extension. That area was pretty alkaline, hence the miracid. No more for the Brug. Thanks so much for all the excellent info.
I have 50% shade cloth in the green house, I may take your advice on a shade structure even if I do move the brug.
I dug this puppy up today. I potted it up rather than fight to keep it happy in a new ground location. It is now getting sun from sunrise til just at noon, and then late sun after 4PM (times are real, not DST). Hopefully that will encourage it to be happy.
Thanks to you all for your knowledge and experience.

Jean, you're welcome. I would be careful of that hot afternoon sun. Four o'clock is still very hot and bright around here. You're location could be too since we are in the same plant hardiness zone. Happy Brugging!
the first 2 pics lookk like they are variegated suaveolens, not Jamie.

I have no idea, other than the tag attached said night blooming Charles Grimaldi. It has not bloomed yet, and I have only had it a little over a year. It was a gift. It is now in a container, and in morning only sun. Gets very dappled light from noon on. Think this is a wait and see plant. Thanks for the info.
