I planted my pototoes in straw and I'm beginning to harvest them. Can I plant more pototoes and maybe chives and beets in the straw that's broken down? I'm wanting to do a fall garden this year.
Fall gardening question
Depending on your growing season length, you might be able to plant potatoes and get a crop, at least of new potatoes. Beets for sure I would think, and chives as well. How did your potato crop turn out?
Pretty weill lots of medium pototes not really any little ones.
If you did get some little ones, you can save them for seed potatoes next spring. I always try to use small, whole potatoes when planting as that cuts down on disease and prevents wireworms.
I'm getting ready to plant my potatoes for the fall. I'm in zone 8a/b.
stephanietx, Is there a good local supplier for seed potatoes in TX? I think I would like to give them a try but don't know what variety would be good, etc. and thought if I bought local that would help.
At this time of year, I don't think there's any seed potatoes to be found. You can try local feed stores and such to see if they have any. We're just going to plant some that are growing in our kitchen from the grocery store! LOL
Try your local organic or Whole Foods stores. They should have potatoes that were grown organically, with no growth inhibitors. One of our DGers recommends that you pick the smallest ones you can find that have eyes on them (at least 3) and you won't have to cut and scab them. He sets them in the sun to start to grow some nice shoots and then plants them. Check the thread Growing Potatoes in Straw. He's on there with other instructions.
Thanks for the replies. Had the flue on Sat. and it seems to be checking back in with me for an hour or so at a time. We don't have a Whole Foods in our area but Brookshire's has an organic section. I'll look there.
Straw method sounds interesting, but I've not seen any realy straw here in Texas since I've moved down. Only hay. Might give it a try in the hay, though. I've been reading the Lasagne Gardening books and I want to try out some of those techniques as well.
We had some of the young cows get into the garden last night (contractor took down some of the fence and stung an extension cord up to keep them out =:o). Luckily I only have zucchini going strong at this time and some flower starts under a shade hoop. Guess cows don't like zucchini :)!
