Okay, proof. Just as LariAnn said...a 2' leaf on A. watsoniana.
Now my question: is it okay in this 6" pot?
How About THIS?
Alison, My compliments-wow!!! Can't answer the question about the pot but wanted to tell you how impressed I was with your plant.
Thank you much.
I just believe so much that it is the progeny of a plant that
makes it so successful. I got this plant from LariAnn. She
told me it would make leaves this size.
I initially thought it would be like all the other Alocasias I grow.
WOW - no way - this one is everything she told me it was!
Are all the A. watsoniana that large or do you just do a great job growing it. I would love to purchase some of LariAnn's plants. Is there a website?
Since you also grow a lot of alocasia, possibly you can answer a question. Do you know of a place where I can mail order lava rock. I need the small size to mix with the soil used to pot those temperamental purple alocasia. I received a plant with the small lava rock in the potting mix and it drains so well and the plant just looks like it is happy. Not a scientific description but it the best I can do. Thanks
Barbara
Alison,
Congrats on your results with this plant so far! IMHO, these plants do better if kept underpotted. If you do repot it, I wouldn't go larger than a 2 gallon or 8" pot, and even then, use a very loose mix that will not get soggy or stay too moist. However, if it is growing well in the pot so far, my advice is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Just make sure that it doesn't tip over if the plant is top-heavy.
LariAnn
LariAnn,
Thanks! That is the first of the large leafs. Maybe I'll leave it
in the 6" for now. I keep the pot placed in a clay pot to keep
it up. (I'm a /fanatic/ about it.)
I'm not 'itching' to repot.
Barbara, as far as lava rock goes I like "firerocks.biz".
ONLY because I like the black best and Walmart only has
red.
