I found this seed, loose in my seed box. I thought it was a pomegranate...now I am not so sure....

It is a Cassia Senna, probably a Candle tree.

Thank you Josephine.

You are welcome Melva.

Do not plant it outside the first year. Wait until next spring after the last frost. Then plant it in a sunny location with good drainage. It should grow 3-12 feet in the first year planted. Seriously. It will die back at first frost in winter so you hack it off at the base, mulch it heavily and it will come back even larger the next year. My flowers were well over 14 inches long last year.

Good advice, but I am not sure that it is winter hardy in DFW, maybe others know.

Mine survived temps down to 22 degrees while mulched and popped back up the following year. I had two at my land that survived dips lower than that.

Excellent, no problem in that case, very good news.

Belton, TX

FYI...we had 4 mature plants that did not survive here in Belton last year and we had the mildest winter on record...they were protected from the north wind as well...?

Did you cut them down level to the ground at the first frost and put about a foot of mulch over the stump? That is what I read you must do. Maybe I was lucky.
