Help me Make Sense of This..

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

ok, i understand that brugs form flowers on branches where the leaves are asymmetrical. However, what if the leaves towards the older part of the branch are asymmetrical, but now all new growth is symmetrical??? is this normal?

This is normal. You will find the sub-equal leaves scattered throughout the canopy.Where each of these joins the stem you should be able to see a very tiny bud forming.

cue_chik,

What you are seeing is the growth of dormant lateral buds. These buds produce vegetative growth not flowering growth. That is why the leaves are symmetrical. The buds are found all along the trunk and branches. They are normally dormant or turned off. Every so often something triggers or turns them on and they'll start to grow. Unless I'm trying to shape my Brug into a standard, I leave them on because every bit of green increases the amount of food the plants produce. Also those are the buds that produce the long straight shoots that can be turned into standards later on.

I havent touched the brug as far as pruning goes, i am just letting it do its thing. so far, not a sign of a flower bud, and Im not geting my hopes up for any this season as I purchased this as a rooted cutting in march. it was only 12 inches long then without a single leaf and now is over 4 ft tall with two vertical and pin straight branches and covered in leaves... I just keep hoping for at least one bloom...LOL.

Keep on fertilizing it once or twice a week and you could see blooms before winter.
