Got this one years ago as Hoya kuhlii, I don't think its that....any ideas would be much appreciated.
Ric
Hoya ? kuhlii
Beautiful flower whatever it is!
Leaves? Please?
I don't know Hoya's very well and have never heard of kuhlii but whatever that one is, the bloom is gorgeous! That is a great photo, looks like that bloom is glowing!
Thanks ladies, I was pleasantly surprised with this one.
Carol, yes....leaves would help, I'll post tomorrow. thanks
Ric
Is it really that orange? Did you get yours from Bob Smoley?
I have a hoya that was gifted me from a friend who bought it from Bob Smoley. The name was H. kuhlii. It is one that for years no one saw it flower so no ID could be given or check or verified...last year i bloomed mine...but I couldn't find anyone to verify it: Chris Burton wouldn't accept it from me and Mark Randal was away, I think. So, this year it bloomed again and the flowers have been dissected and the pictures of the 'parts' shared with 'other' experts. IF that is the same one? Mine bloomed white with a red center, Teds bloomes pink (his bloomed for the first time this year too). OH? The way we got them to bloom was by putting them in the full sun all day...another umbel is forming on mine. It is such a beautifully growing plant I wouldn't care if it never bloomed!!!
Gosh...hope it is the same cause I've written a novel about it!!!!

I had to go google H. kuhlii and found this picture: http://www.growinghoyas.com/hoya_kuhlii.htm The bloom doesn't look anything like your photo and nowhere as pretty either!
This also popped up when googling kuhlii: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/512484/ an old thread from 2005. I wonder if Awanda still grows kuhlii and could give some input?
Wow, what a pretty webpage... I want to go back there!! Lin...can you put your links up in the Stickies...I think there is a place for links...and if not, could you post yours?
Carol
Carol, Yes I will see if I can add the link to the stickies ... never done it before but I should be able to figure it out if there's a place there to put it! Will post back here when it's done.
Thanks Lin,
Doesn't look like Hoya kuhlii at all. lol I like my NOID better.
Carol, I got it from Mel and emailed her to see if hers as bloomed.
I took the pic inside with artificial light....the corollas are almost pure white with the coronas being red towards the center and tapering to white in the outer coronas.
Christine....its not you, I should of taken the pic in day light. The lamp I used gave the flower a warm glow.
Ok, I posted the link here on this thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/470720/#new
I hope that was the correct place for it. No one has posted there since 2005 but hopefully whoever is in charge of the stickies will move it to the correct place if it's in error.
edited to correct my old, blonde typing moment!

Ric, I like your noid much better than kuhlii too ... much prettier bloom! And, I like the way the photo came out with that lighting.
1975 Lin??! Was there even computers back then?
LOL, Lee Anne, I don't know where my brain was when I typed in that date ... obviously thinking of something back in 1975!
I do remember when I first began using a computer at work in the late 70's! It sure made life a lot easier. I worked in Accts. Receivables and before computers came into the office we had to post payments on some humongous posting machine that took up half of our little office!
Ric: That true to life pic is really pretty too! Hope you find out the identity of that hoya!
Carol: That is a gorgeous plant!
Thanks, Lin....I really love this plant...! I have grown it and propagated it just because it is so beautiful and so darn easy to grow... Ya'know...flowers are great, but not as great, I think, as the great growth, overally 'scope' of the plant and the ease of care.... It IS the plant, not the flowers, cleaning our air space...I would much rather have a beautiful plant with great leaves that blooms every 2 years than a blooming fool with nasty leaves. Luckily, there aren't many of either one in hoyas!!!
Carol.....thats it. Very nice hoya indeed, like you said...easy to grow and great looking foliage. I think the way I got it to bloom was to let it loose........the vines that finally bloomed are 5 feet away from the pot and keep growing. It gets mostly shade. Maybe I'll move it to an area with more sun.
To me it looks like it could be a cross....maybe having Hoya erythrostemma as one of the parents.......the coronas are very similar.
Thanks Lin.......I think Carol and I have a NOID. Surprised this wonderful hoya has remained unnamed (if thats the case)
ric
Ric, Very pretty what ever it is.
Carol, that plant is beautiful!!
Well, whatever the name may be, it's a beautiful Hoya. I'm like some of y'all, if it has nice looking foliage and growth, the bloom is sometimes secondary. I can always sit some other blooming plant in front of, or next to the pretty foliage plants! I've been known to do that in hopes it would make the non- bloomer jealous enough to decide to show it's blooms! I know it doesn't really work that way, LOL but it can make for a nice display. I've had plants full of blooms with ugly looking foliage so I just try to show up the pretty flowers with the pretty foliage from other plants grouped together.
Interesting about this hoya. Ted Green got his from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) but we don't know much about it at all.
Mark is going to put photos and comments up on the next STEMMA - after examining all of the juicy parts he (and DL agrees) finds it belongs to the H. acuta/parasitica complex as the flowers indicate. I have one growing out in an avocado tree and the vines are about 5' long and FULL. Great growing hoya.
i just got the photos from Mark of the corona on mine and they are very very different. Maybe you could post a photo of the leaves, eh?
Carol
Ric, it doesn't look like Hoya aff. ovalifolia, but it does look a lot like Hoya sp. Hat Som Paen (IML1438), take a look here:
http://www.thailandhoyaclub.com/webboard/index.php?topic=560.0
The leaves match too. Take a look here:
http://www.hoyor.net/en/showspecies.php?id=244
If this takes you to the main page of Maggie's website, click on the British flag, then look under "species" and then "sp. Hat Som Paen".
Thanks Mark,
I'm sure thats what I have. Great easy hoya....not fusy at all.
I really appreciate everyone who took time to help me out on this one.
Awee...thats it!!! Exact match. Thanks again!!!
Great hoya site....I'll be making it as a favorite.
Ric, its a really cool plant, and very interesting taxonomically. Very close to Hoya elliptica, but different. Also kind of rare- you lucked out!
I just checked David Liddle's 2009 catalog and this is the listing for IML 1438:
1438 I sp. Thailand white corolla white corona. $11.00
White corolla and white corona? Doesn't sound like the same plant.
I thought that the IML numbers remained with a plant regardless of any name changes? If that's true, shouldn't the plant's flowers continue to be the same as those shown in the photos above?
I'm just curious...
Thanks,
Mike
Weeeeellllllllll....essentially the corona is white...just red in the center. If it were all cream colored, or pink it could still be the same hoya... flower color often changes with environment and nutrition. I think Rics pictures are a bit yellowish due to the light.
So the description is more-or-less accurate? It surprises me that there is no mention of the red color in the flower. White corolla and white corona sounds like an all-white flower to me.
You'll have to forgive me since I'm kinda new to this plant description stuff. (:o)
Thanks,
Mike
Yes...it is accurate. The color in the very center of the corona is called something I forget....but that corona is white. Silly, eh?
Carol
Yeah, it is silly.
There should be a law that you have to mention every color that exists in the flower! LOL
Ah, but there is no perfect world...
Mike
No...'cause you know what? In a PERFECT world I would be 40 years old with a drop dead body and gobs of money.... LOL... Used to be one of my favorite sayings to bring out with an unhappy customer!!!!
ROFL Carol .... I wanna be in that perfect world! I'd even settle for 50 years old (well, maybe 45) with a kinda, sorta, almost drop dead body ... and a gob of money! ^_^ Geesh, I'd even forget about the drop dead body if I could just be 45 and have the gob of money! ^_^
Mark, you are good! I am majorly impressed that you IDed that plant.
It surely is H. Hat Som Pean from David LIddle. I got the plant in 2004 and also got IML 1038 which he then labeled H. aff. khulii. (Now David calls 1038 H. amoena.) No doubt, I got the labels switched and apologize for the confusion. My bad. (At least you got a better plant in the mix up!)
Ric, my plant has yet to bloom after 5 years! At least I now know what to expect. I think I will print your bloom picture and pin it to the Hoya. Maybe that will give it the message to bloom.
Keeping track of Davids name changes from year to year can be a challenge. I finally got most of my collection entered on an excel document, which really helps as I can put the IML #'s in ascending order as I go through Davids catalog. Carol, do you have a system for keeping up with Davids changes?
