Are these seeds or flower blooms? (Scarlet Mallow)

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

This is my first year with this species, so I'm not sure if this is a bloom about to burst open, or if it's a seed pod like my other hibiscus plant. There are several on the plant right now (7 or 8). If it's a seed pod, I definitely want to collect them for future plants, as I love this one so far!

well it must be a pod, don't you reckon? wait till it drys up then harvest and save some for me!

It looks like one to me also, but I seem to recall something similar when it was about to bloom. I will keep a close eye on them and see what they do. I hope they're seeds because I sure would love more of this beauty next year! Will keep you posted as well.

That is a developing seed pod.

Thank you, Moby! Woohoo! I'll be sure to collect them when they dry. This plant is a beautiful bloomer, so I'm excited about being able to add more of them to my landscape next year! :)

I've read about people suggesting "bagging" seed heads, which might be better for me to do, considering this one grows in my pond. How does one do this? Is it as simple as putting a baggy around the pod and twisty-tying it to the limb? Tight, not too tight? Any suggestions/tips? Thanks much!

Bagging would be good but I would wait until they are closer to ripening. Let them get the light they need in the meantime.

Nooo to the baggie! If you're talking about plastic, that is. Paper or cloth. I've heard some folks use a section of old pantyhose (knee-highs) to catch seeds. A friend used something like this ~ perfect and decorative too! lol http://www.pouchmart.com/store/site/department.cfm?id=AE0F8CAE-F274-4391-8EA351AD5E417B95

I've bought similar bags at the $1 stores.....like Dollar Tree in the party decoration sections.
Think 3-4 for a dollar.

Those little sheer pouches are perfect! You can see when the seeds fall, and you have a tie on it, all in one! Great idea, thanks! I misspoke earlier; there are about 7 or 8 seed pods forming on each limb (2).

Go with some kind of bag that "breathes". You want to stay away from some kind of bag that is going to collect or hold moisture. That will rot the seeds/seed pod. You could probably make your own bag with something that looks like mesh material. It will "do the trick" and will not hold excess moisture.

Will do! Thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought about breathability and potentially rotting out the seeds.

The bags look like the same thing Moby suggested. My DIL uses them for small jewelry gifts. What do the flowers look like? Good luck with your seed gathering.

I've got netting & ribbons to put around my pods in the am! I've got some roots coming out of cuttings in water & some new leaves sprouting out from around the cuttings I stuck in the soil. First time ever for me! I'm thrilled!

can we talk greenhouse anyone? I'm off to check out that forum now...it was an awesome day here in VA...
